• Mondsee - Nestled in the scenic landscape between Mondsee and Irrsee lakes, the town of Mondsee is renowned for St. Michael’s Wedding Basilica. This basilica gained fame as the wedding venue for Maria and Captain von Trapp in the globally acclaimed musical, “The Sound of Music.” Since then, it has hosted over 400 weddings. The basilica, dating back to the 12th century, stands as a symbol of Mondsee and is among Austria’s largest Gothic churches. It received its lavish decoration at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, though its history extends much further. Originally, the site was home to the Mondsee monastery, established in 748. After 800, the “Mondsee Matthew,” the oldest German translation of the Bible, was penned here. Following the monastery’s dissolution in 1791, the building was transformed into a castle and now serves as a hotel. The lake is known as one of the warmest in the Salzkammergut region.
