This basilica gained fame as the wedding venue for Maria and Captain von Trapp in the globally acclaimed musical, The Sound of Music. Since then, it has hosted over 400 weddings. Dating back to the 12th century, the basilica is a symbol of Mondsee and ranks among Austria’s largest Gothic churches. Its lavish decoration was added between the 17th and 18th centuries. The site’s history is even older, originally housing the Mondsee monastery, established in 748. After 800, the “Mondsee Matthew,” the earliest German Bible translation, was penned here. Following the monastery’s dissolution in 1791, the building was transformed into a castle and now serves as a hotel. The lake is noted as one of the warmest in the Salzkammergut region.
