Kharkhorin - Karakorum served as the capital of the Great Mongolian Empire during the 13th century. It is positioned on the right bank of the Orkhon River, about 360 km southwest of Ulaanbaatar, the current capital of Mongolia.
In 1380, Karakorum was destroyed. Approximately two centuries later, Avtai Khan, the founder of the Erdene Zuu Monastery, established the monastery on the same site.
Today, Kharkhorin is abundant in historical and cultural sites, including the renowned Erdene Zuu Monastery.
