- Zuiderwoude - Travel through the picturesque countryside north of Amsterdam, passing charming villages and taking scenic small roads. Enjoy a leisurely drive past dairy farms, meadows, cows, sheep, geese, swans, horses, and ditches with high water levels. Along the way, discover fascinating insights into Dutch agriculture. The journey to Zuiderwoude takes approximately 20 minutes.
- Monnickendam - Following Zuiderwoude, proceed to Monnickendam. En route, pause for 15 minutes near a pumping station to learn about the former Zuyderzee, the polders, the dikes, and Dutch Water Management. Discover the significant flood of 1916 and the rationale behind the construction of the large closing dike. Gain knowledge about the 4000 Dutch polders (reclaimed land) and the transformation of the once salty Zuyderzee into fresh water.
Explore the turbines on the opposite side of the former Zuyderzee. Drive through the historic fishing village of Monnickendam, featuring narrow streets, charming bridges, and colorful houses.
- Jacobs Hoeve Cheese Farm by Henri Willig - After Monnickendam, head to Jacobs Hoeve cheese farm to learn all about cheese production. The demonstration is captivating, and you can sample a variety of cheeses (included). They also offer shipping for your cheese if needed.
WOW-experience: Jacobs Hoeve boasts a state-of-the-art stable with Jersey cows. Each cow wears a collar with a chip, and they are automatically fed and milked by a robot, without human intervention. This advanced technology is truly impressive and a must-see. Prepare to be amazed.
- Volendam - Travel via rural roads to Volendam, the fishing village. Visit the cemetery with the graves of 14 children who tragically died in a disco fire in 2001. Then, stroll through the oldest part of Volendam: the Maze. Admire the quaint fishermen’s houses, where families sometimes lived with 12 children. Appreciate the gable stone on the whale fisher’s house. Purchase souvenirs on the Dike, the village’s tourist area, with numerous shops and restaurants. Savor delicious fish at a fish stall. Enjoy the boats in the harbor and explore the area. Marvel at 500 (!!) 19th-century paintings in a renowned hotel.
- Edam - Edam is a historic city famous for Edam Cheese: a round young cheese in red packaging.
Drive through an old section of Edam, passing teahouses, small bridges, the 400-year-old water management building, the old shipyard, and navigate narrow streets with beautiful old houses.
-
Zaanse Schans - From Edam, travel via rural roads through the Wormer polder to the windmills at Zaanse Schans. Once home to over 600 mills, including saw mills, paint mills, ship rig mills, oil mills, and paper mills, it was the world’s first industrial area. Now, only a few remain, and you will visit one: a genuine working old-fashioned sawmill, operating as it did 400 years ago. Learn about its construction, admire the traditional techniques, hear the mill crunch while sawing, feel the floor vibrate, receive explanations from volunteer certified millers, and experience a “WOW” attraction. Then, wander through the picturesque village with beautiful green wooden houses. Sample cookies in the bakery museum. Visit the clog museum, admire the various types of clogs, and see how clogs are made. Perhaps try walking in clogs.
And finally, enjoy the delightful aroma of the cocoa factories across the Zaan river.
