Mont-Saint-Michel - In addition to visiting the abbey, visitors can stroll along the ramparts and enjoy a meal at one of the island’s delightful restaurants. The island has been fortified since ancient times and has housed a monastery since the 8th century AD. From the 5th to the 8th century, Mont Saint-Michel was part of Neustria and remained unconquered during the Hundred Years’ War. King Louis XI later converted it into a prison. According to legend, in 708, the archangel Michael appeared to Aubert of Avranches, the bishop of Avranches, instructing him to build a church on the rocky island.
Saint Malo - The City of Corsairs
Saint-Malo - On this day, visitors will explore the renowned city of Saint Malo. Founded by Gauls in the 1st century B.C., the city is named after Saint Malo or Maclou, a follower of Brendan the Navigator and an immigrant from present-day Wales. Jacques Cartier, the famous explorer who navigated the rivers of Canada and named the country from the local term “kanata,” also set sail from here.
Cathedrale de Saint-Malo - The Saint-Malo Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral dedicated to Saint Vincent of Saragossa. Constructed in a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles during the episcopacy of Jean de Châtillon (1146-1163), it stands on the site of an ancient church founded in the 7th century. The cathedral was damaged during World War II when the steeple collapsed onto the Sacred Heart Chapel. On 21 May 1972, after 28 years of restoration work, a ceremony was held to celebrate its completion. It is a stop on the Tro Breizh, a Catholic pilgrimage connecting the towns of Brittany’s seven founding saints.
