Norris Geyser Basin - Yellowstone Norris Geyser Basin
Norris Geyser Basin, named after an early Yellowstone Superintendent, is one of the hottest geyser basins in Yellowstone. The stark, barren landscape of Porcelain Basin results from the acidic environment. The basin’s colors come from mineral oxides, with pink, red, orange (iron oxides), and yellow (sulfur and iron sulfates) spectrums. The world’s largest geyser, Steamboat Geyser, is located here, with eruptions sending jets of water nearly 380 feet high.
Upper Falls - Upper Yellowstone Falls
Located a quarter mile upstream of the larger Lower Falls, the Upper Yellowstone River Falls plunge 109 feet down an eroded lava cliff into the basin below. The area below the falls has experienced heavier erosion than above.

The colors change and intensify after rain with bright sunshine.

Fountain Paint Pot - Fountain Paint Pot
Named for the reds, yellows, and browns of the mud, the Fountain Paint Pot’s colors come from oxidation states of the iron in the mud. The heat in the caldera forces pressurized water up through the ground, causing bubbling action. The bubble action varies with the seasons.
Grand Prismatic Spring - The Grand Prismatic Hot Spring
The Grand Prismatic Spring, approximately 370 feet (110 m) in diameter and 160 feet (50 m) deep, discharges an estimated 560 US gallons (2,100 L) of 160 °F (70 °C) water per minute. It is the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest in the world. The vivid colors result from microbial mats around the edges of the mineral-rich water. The mats produce colors ranging from green to red, depending on the ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoids and the temperature gradient. In summer, the mats are orange and red, while in winter, they are usually dark green. The pool’s center is sterile due to extreme heat.

Mediating between geological formations and abstract compositions, Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains consists of locally-sourced limestone boulders stacked vertically in groups ranging between three and six. Each stone boasts a different fluorescent color; each individual totem stands between thirty and thirty-five feet high.
