Highlights include the ‘Museo del Carnaval’ and ‘Mercado del Puerto’.
• Plaza Zabala - Dedicated to the city’s founder, Zabala’s square is a lovely green space in front of the ‘Taranco Palace’ (museum of decorative arts). We’ll delve into Montevideo’s origins and its enduring colonial legacy.
• Plaza Matriz - Once the hub of daily life in the 1800s, this square features a distinct Spanish style. We’ll visit the San Felipe y Santiago Cathedral, the Cabildo museum (formerly the administrative and judicial center), and enjoy a crafts fair known for its antiques and traditional Uruguayan items.
• Plaza Independencia - The most significant square in Uruguay’s capital, marking the boundary between the historic district and downtown. It houses the remains of national hero José Gervasio Artigas in an underground mausoleum and features the iconic ‘Gate of the Citadel’ monument, perfect for postcard-worthy photos.
• Theatre Solis - While learning about Independence Square, we’ll also admire the architecture of Solis Theatre, the oldest theater in Latin America.
• Palacio Legislativo - This 100-year-old building, with its stunning neoclassical architecture, is where the Senate and House of Representatives create new laws. Nearby, we can visit the Agricultural Market to sample typical Uruguayan snacks like empanadas, alfajores, or dulce de leche.
• Obelisco a los Constituyentes - This 131-foot (40-meter) monument, reminiscent of Buenos Aires’ Obelisk, marks the start of Montevideo’s main avenue, 18 de Julio.
• Parque Batlle - Here, we’ll appreciate the city’s largest green space. Named after a prominent president, Batlle Park features a velodrome (used for carnival celebrations) and the ‘Carreta’ (Wagon) sculpture, symbolizing Uruguay’s agricultural heritage.
• Estadio Centenario - Recognized by FIFA as the only monument to world football, this stadium hosted the first World Cup in 1930, where Uruguay emerged victorious.

• Rambla de Montevideo - We’ll enjoy the breeze from the De La Plata river as we drive along the world’s longest promenade. Spanning 24 km (15 miles) of continuous coastline, we’ll see people sharing ‘Mate’ (a traditional hot beverage), jogging, and families enjoying the beach.
• Carrasco - Time to savor a traditional meal. With numerous restaurant options on Arocena street, we recommend trying the famous ‘Chivito’ or Uruguayan asado in the Carrasco neighborhood, known for its luxurious residences.
