• Bears Ears National Monument - As we approach Canyonlands National Park, we may pass through a portion of Bears Ears National Monument. However, the boundaries of this monument are somewhat complex and may change.

Note: The tour spans over 40 miles, includes more than 20 audio stories, and takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete.

• Newspaper Rock Recreation Site - This is a must-see stop. Without revealing too much, it’s worth noting that various cultures have visited this site over the past 2000 years, leaving their marks on the rock.
• The Needles District Campground - You’ll pass Glamping Canyonlands on the right—a notable landmark and a popular accommodation for visitors. From there, follow UT-211 west as the journey through the stunning landscapes of the Needles District in Canyonlands National Park begins.
• Indian Creek - Prepare for breathtaking views of the Indian Creek Corridor. This area is a haven for rock climbers and is one of the most renowned spots for crack climbing in the United States, if not globally.
• CRC Dugout Ranch - When Heidi Redd and her former husband Robert acquired the Dugout Ranch in 1967, the road was unpaved from U.S. Route 191, climbers had not yet flocked to Indian Creek, and this part of Canyonlands National Park had few visitors. Until recently, with the introduction of satellite internet, the Dugout Ranch had no TV or telephone.
• Six-Shooter Peaks View Area - The northern peak is called North Six Shooter Peak, slightly taller and larger than its southern counterpart, South Six Shooter Peak. The two peaks are about a mile and a half apart, and their resemblance to revolvers pointing skyward inspired their names.
• Lockhart Basin - We’ll notice the turnoff to the right for Lockhart Basin Road. This road leads to Moab, but a robust off-road vehicle is necessary for the journey.
• Needles District Visitor Center - The Visitor Center is approaching on our right. It’s advisable to stop here to ensure the trails we plan to visit are open. Water and restrooms are available here as well.
• Cave Spring - The first pull-out on our left is for Roadside Ruin. It’s best to skip this one for now and catch it on the way out. Shortly after, a sign for Cave Springs will direct us to a road on the left.
• Cave Spring Trailhead - Continue straight past the ranger residences, and in less than a mile, a dirt road will appear. A sign will point toward the Cave Springs Trail. Be sure to return to the main park road the same way to avoid missing other park stops.
• Wooden Shoe Arch Overlook - Known as the Wooden Shoe Overlook, you’ll see why it was named after the classic Dutch shoe. Yes, an arch here at Needles in Canyonlands National Park.
• The Needles Campground - The Needles Campground and the unpaved Elephant Hill Road. Six miles down Elephant Hill Road is the trail to Druid Arch. Many backpackers and hikers aiming for Chesler Park start from either the Elephant Hill Trailhead or the Salt Flat Trailhead near the campground.
• Pothole Point Trail - Approaching the Pothole Point Trailhead, named for the slickrock covered with rock pockets known as potholes or ephemeral pools.
• Slickrock Cinemas 3 - We’re nearing the end of the road, that was quick - the Scenic Drive in the Needles district is indeed short. Our next stop is the trailhead for the Slickrock Foot Trail.
• Big Spring Canyon Overlook - We’re nearing the turnaround point of our Needles District Tour. At the turnaround, another trailhead awaits - the Big Spring Canyon Overlook Trail, leading to the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers and connecting to the Chesler Park area trails. It’s recommended to prioritize the previously mentioned trails and begin heading back toward the park entrance.
