Trail Lake is situated on the Historic Iditarod Trail, and the journey even takes you under the Alaskan Railroad. Moose Pass and Trail Lake are conveniently located next to the Iditarod National Historic Trail. Participating in the trail crew to help restore the original path for hikers and historians is a cherished activity. The dream is to see the entire trail hikeable from Seward North, just as it was in the beginning. There are countless stories to share about this remarkable and significant part of Alaskan history.
- Moose Pass - This charming town boasts a rich history. It features one of the oldest schools and longest-running libraries on the Kenai Peninsula, a grocery store that was relocated across town on logs, and a lodge and restaurant that began as the remote Jockey Club, once adorned with black lights and a disco ball. There’s an abundance of fascinating stories, people, and places to discuss. The anticipation is high.
- Trail Lake - Following a general orientation and kayak instruction, time will be spent kayaking across the glacially fed Trail Lake. The lake is home to Rainbow Trout, Lake Trout, and other fish, and it flows into Kenai Lake, allowing salmon to make their way upstream. Bears or moose are often spotted along the shores, and the area is teeming with Bald Eagles.
- Chugach National Forest - The Chugach National Forest spans 6,908,540 acres (27,958 km2) in south-central Alaska. It encompasses vast shorelines, glaciers, forests, and rivers, much of which remains untouched by roads or trails. The forest is home to numerous bird, mammal, and marine species, including extensive shorebird habitats and a bald eagle population larger than that of the contiguous 48 states combined.

After a brief paddle south, you’ll come ashore for a hike along a segment of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, ascending over the ridge to the breathtaking, emerald waters of Grant Lake. Although the terrain is moderately challenging, the lush vegetation that flourishes in spring and summer reminds you that you’re in the heart of wild Alaska. The awe-inspiring views of Grant Lake are truly indescribable. Enjoy a leisurely lunch here before setting off on kayaks once more to explore the area from the water, then hike back down the trail towards Moose Pass.
