WALKING SAFARI IN THE PARK
A walking safari is typically tailored to fit into your safari itinerary and can be scheduled for early morning or late afternoon when the tropical temperatures are cooler. These walks are guided and usually accompanied by an armed ranger. A walking safari provides an excellent break from game drives, allowing visitors to learn intriguing facts about nature, birds, reptiles, insects, and the medicinal uses of local plants, which might not be fully appreciated from a safari vehicle. The scents and sounds of the African bush are best experienced on foot, making it an adventurous and thrilling experience, especially when the walk extends into wildlife habitats where encounters with freely roaming animals are common, as in Mikumi National Park and other parks.
Upon arrival, registration is required to obtain a permit for the walking safari and game drive, which takes about 15 minutes (depending on the number of people). The walking safari lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours, followed by breakfast. After breakfast, a game drive continues until 1 pm, after which lunch and a short rest are scheduled (as there is less to see during this time due to the sun).
This tour can depart any day and can be organized for individual or group safaris. It is recommended to leave early in the morning (5 am) as there is a greater chance to see more before the sun becomes strong and animals seek shade.
The drive from Morogoro to Mikumi National Park takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the park’s border and an additional 30 minutes to the park entry gate.
After lunch and a brief rest, a short game drive (about 1 hour) is conducted before returning to Morogoro, arriving around 5:30 pm, marking the end of this day trip tour.
This tour can be customized to a 2-day safari, including a visit to Udzungwa Mountains National Park, which is ideal for a day hike. This hike leads to one of the famous waterfalls in southern Tanzania, the Sanje Waterfalls.
