- Thingvellir National Park - Shortly, the tour will reach its first destination, the awe-inspiring Thingvellir National Park. Here, the vast divide between the Eurasian and American continental plates is visible as they gradually separate along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This geological activity sparked the massive volcanic eruptions that formed Iceland around 20 million years ago, with eruptions and earthquakes still occurring across the country. Rest assured, there hasn’t been an eruption here for two thousand years!
Thingvellir holds great significance for Icelanders as it was the site of the Althingi, the national Parliament, from 930 AD until the 18th century. Laws were enacted at the “Law Rock,” disputes resolved, and festivals celebrated. Iceland declared independence from Denmark here in 1945, and Thingvellir became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.
- Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths - The journey continues through the quaint village of Laugarvatn, nestled beside a stunning lake of the same name in a geothermally active region. Locals even utilize the hot steam vapor to bake rye bread underground!
- Geysir - Next, the tour arrives at the Haukadalur Geothermal area and Geysir, the namesake of geysers worldwide. Geysir and Strokkur are the largest geysers here, with Strokkur erupting every few minutes, reaching heights of up to 30 meters.
Renowned globally for its power and beauty, Strokkur, another geyser spring, is nearby and highly active, consistently erupting to heights of up to 30 meters every few minutes. Streams of super-heated water flow around, leaving fascinating colorful residues. While in the Geysir area, there is time to enjoy lunch, snacks, or shop for souvenirs at the nearby service station.
- Gullfoss Waterfall - The tour then proceeds to Gullfoss, meaning the “golden waterfall,” passing through remote upland farms where Icelandic horses often outnumber people. There might even be a chance to greet the horses if they are near the fences.
Gullfoss is one of Iceland’s most beloved natural wonders. This double-drop waterfall cascades over 30 meters, creating a spectacular spray as millions of gallons of water plunge into a narrow ravine. Gullfoss is a magnificent sight year-round.
On sunny days, vibrant rainbows adorn the area, created by the constant spray. The waterfall is continuously fed by glacial meltwater from the Langjokull glacier, 40 km deeper into the Highlands, leading to the Hvita (White) river, with the flow doubling in summer. Several viewing platforms are available, though some close in winter.
- Kerid Crater - The journey continues back towards Reykjavik via a different route, passing Reykholt, known for its geothermally-heated greenhouses. The final sightseeing stop is a bonus, as the “classic” Golden Circle typically includes only three famous stops.
An extra treat awaits at Kerid, a 55m deep and 270m wide volcanic crater, beautifully adorned with red earth and green mosses, featuring a turquoise-blue mineral water lake for a stunning spectacle. A pathway allows visitors to descend to the crater’s bottom for a closer view.
- Hveragerdi - On the return to Reykjavík, the tour passes through the rolling farmlands of the South Coast and the geothermal areas around Hveragerdi, renowned for numerous greenhouses and horse farms.
- The Geothermal Energy Exhibition - As the tour returns to Reykjavík, the scenic route includes the rolling farmlands of the South Coast and the geothermal areas near Hveragerdi, famous for its greenhouses and horse farms.
The journey also features rugged lava fields as it ascends the Hellisheidi mountain pass, with a geothermal power plant emitting impressive plumes of steam into the air.
