Lake Chala - Crocodiles were introduced to Lake Chala in the 1930s. According to legend, they were brought by E.S. Grogan, a British explorer renowned for his journey from Cape Town to Cairo in 1898. The environment is unsuitable for crocodile breeding, as there are no beaches or sandy areas for nesting. In the early 1990s, fishermen, frustrated by their nets being damaged, initiated a program to remove them. Now, there are no crocodiles left in Lake Chala, making it safe for swimming; however, as with any location in Africa, caution is advised.
Kikuletwa Hot Springs - Named for its “boiling” nature, this geothermal site features warm water emerging from underground to form a small pond (oasis) surrounded by wild palms and fig trees. Its crystal-clear water offers a unique open-air jacuzzi swimming experience. The surrounding area is home to various land uses by diverse local communities of pastoralists and agriculturalists. The off-road ride to this gem will take you through different terrains suitable for every riding experience.
Lake Chala to West Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro - This day promises to be fantastic as the ride will take you from the windward side of Mount Kilimanjaro to its leeward side. The two peaks, Mawenzi and Kibo, will be visible in the morning and evening. This is also an opportunity to encounter the Chagga people, known as the traditional conservators of Mount Kilimanjaro. A picnic lunch will be enjoyed, and with some luck, mountain primates such as black and white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys might be spotted in the forest reserve. The ride will traverse earthy roads and newly paved roads, covering a distance of 140 km, culminating at Maasai Lodge for dinner. The camp is nestled between Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru, offering stunning views of both ancient volcanic mountains. Riding around the mountain provides the best views from all angles, with stops in villages surrounding the mountain, featuring abundant natural and man-made forests.
West Kilimanjaro to Arusha
Enduimet WMA Elerai Gate - On this day, the ride will be on typical African roads, featuring dust, sand, and gravel, leading to the small town of Longido. This adventure ride follows a very dusty trail down into a vast gorge where resident wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, and antelopes gather for grazing and water. The final 50 km of this leg is a sandy and stony track cut through the Rift Valley, arriving in Arusha from the eastern side.
