A Journey to Materuni Village

As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, I found myself drawn to the Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Tour, nestled at the edge of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The allure of exploring the last village before entering the national parks was irresistible. My journey began in Moshi, where I was promptly picked up from the bustling Viva Supermarket. The anticipation of the day ahead was palpable as we made our way to Materuni Village, the gateway to a world of natural beauty and cultural richness.

The ride to the village was an adventure in itself. Opting for the local “bajaji,” a charming rickshaw, added a delightful touch of authenticity to the experience. The winding roads offered glimpses of the lush landscapes that awaited us. As we arrived in Materuni, the air was filled with the earthy aroma of coffee, hinting at the treasures that lay ahead.

The Enchanting Waterfall Hike

The hike to Materuni Waterfall was a journey through a tapestry of vibrant greens and breathtaking vistas. Our guide, Boni, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing insights about the local flora and fauna. His friendly demeanor made the trek feel like a leisurely stroll with an old friend. The path, though muddy at times, was a testament to the raw beauty of the region.

As we approached the waterfall, the sound of cascading water grew louder, building anticipation. The sight that greeted us was nothing short of spectacular. The waterfall, standing tall at 90 meters, was a majestic display of nature’s power. The cool mist from the falls was refreshing, and I couldn’t resist the temptation to take a dip in the crystal-clear pool at its base. It was a moment of pure bliss, surrounded by the untouched beauty of the landscape.

A Taste of Tradition

After the invigorating hike, we returned to the village for a culinary and cultural feast. The coffee ceremony was a highlight, offering a deep dive into the traditional methods of coffee production. From pounding the beans to roasting and grinding, each step was a hands-on experience that connected us to the rich heritage of the Chagga people. The final cup of coffee was a revelation, its rich flavors a testament to the meticulous process.

Lunch was a delightful affair, featuring a spread of local dishes that were both flavorful and nourishing. The Chagga hot lunch was a perfect way to recharge after the hike. As we dined, the rhythmic beats of traditional Chagga dance filled the air, adding a festive touch to the meal.

Before departing, I took the opportunity to explore the local market, where I found an array of handmade souvenirs and local products. Purchasing freshly made coffee and honey felt like a meaningful way to support the community and take a piece of Materuni home with me.
