ARRIVAL
Altezza Travel - Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), an Altezza Travel representative will greet you and arrange your transfer to the hotel included in your package. The hotel offers all the essentials for a pleasant stay: comfortable rooms, hot water, courteous staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. Note: Check-in begins at 2:00 PM.
TREKKING FROM MACHAME GATE TO MACHAME CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - In the morning, a guide and mountain support team will meet you at the hotel for a brief orientation before traveling by vehicle to the entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park: Machame Gate (1,800 m). After the formalities of obtaining climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, the group will begin the trek to Machame Camp (3,010 m). The route passes through the rainforest, where tropical showers are likely, so it is advisable to bring spare clothes and raincoats.
This will be your first day at this altitude, so it is highly recommended to follow these instructions from this point on:
• Avoid alcohol and caffeine • Drink over 4 liters of bottled water daily (in small, frequent amounts) • Take a Diamox pill to help ease altitude sickness symptoms. Most climbers take Diamox in the morning before starting their ascent to reduce altitude sickness discomfort. It is advisable to consult your doctor before the trip in case of potential allergies.
At night, you may experience discomfort due to acclimatization to the high altitude: as your waking breathing pattern decreases, your body receives less oxygen than during the day. Considering the altitude, you may feel unwell and have a headache. Pay attention to your body and inform your guide if you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness.
Change in Elevation: Machame Gate (1,800 m) — Machame Camp (3,010 m) Hiking distance: 11 km Hiking time: 5-6 hours
TREKKING FROM MACHAME CAMP TO SHIRA CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, you will begin trekking to the second high-altitude camp, Shira Camp (3,845 m). On this day, you will emerge from the rainforest and, for the first time, enjoy breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau. Physically, the trek is not very challenging, but you may feel the altitude changes, so listen to your body and remember that maintaining the right pace is crucial for a successful trek. Upon reaching the camp, you will have lunch and rest, followed by an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower Camp with a 300-meter altitude gain. Back at Shira Camp, a hot dinner will be served.
Note: The acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight altitude gain to speed up the acclimatization process. Taking these hikes seriously is important as they increase your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and protect you from altitude sickness.
Trekking from Machame Camp to Shira Camp: Change in Elevation: Machame Camp (3,010 m) — Shira Camp (3,845 m) Hiking distance: 5 km Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Acclimatization hike: Change in Elevation: Shira Camp (3,845 m) — Destination point on the way to Lava Tower (4,120 m) Hiking distance: 2 km Hiking time: 1–2 hours
TREKKING FROM SHIRA CAMP TO THE LAVA TOWER AND DESCENT TO BARRANCO CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, you will depart from Shira Camp (3,845 m) and head to the key point of the route: Lava Tower (4,630 m). This section involves many ascents and descents, ending at a camp over 4,600 meters. It may be challenging, and you might feel some discomfort, but to acclimate successfully, you need to spend at least 1–2 hours here, where lunch will be served.
Then, you will descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m), where you can admire the famous Barranco Wall, impressive in its size and steepness! The next day, you will climb it, but don’t worry: it features a straightforward hiking trail.
Note: If any participants feel unwell, the group may skip the Lava Tower and adjust the route, following the porters’ road instead. In this case, you will not reach an altitude of 4,630 meters, only up to a maximum of 4,400 meters.
Change in Elevation: Shira Camp (3,845 m) — Lava Tower (4,630 m) — Barranco Camp (3,960 m) Hiking distance: 11 km Hiking time: 6-8 hours
TREKKING FROM BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP
TREKKING FROM KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - In the morning, after breakfast, you will begin your journey to Barafu Summit Camp (4,640 m), the starting point for a night ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Our team will set up a camp for you in advance, including tents and sleeping bags, so you can relax. After regaining strength, you will complete an acclimatization hike towards the intermediate Kosovo Summit Camp (4,800 m) and then return to Barafu Camp, where a hot dinner will be served. It is advisable to spend the rest of the day resting and sleeping before the night ascent.
Trekking from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp: Change in Elevation: Karanga Camp (4,035 m) — Barafu Camp (4,640 m) Hiking distance: 6 km Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Acclimatization hike: Change in Elevation: Barafu Camp (4,640 m) — Kosovo Camp (4,800 m) Hiking distance: 2 km Hiking time: 1–2 hours
ASCENT TO UHURU PEAK AND DESCENT TO MILLENNIUM CAMP
Mount Kilimanjaro - Departure from Barafu Camp (4,640 m) at night marks the start of the ascent to Kilimanjaro: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Technically, the climb is relatively straightforward; however, the high altitude is the most challenging aspect. Each pair of climbers will have a personal guide throughout the ascent to monitor physical and mental conditions. After successfully reaching Uhuru Peak, you can descend to the nearest glacier if desired. Then, you will return to Barafu Camp and, after a 2-hour rest, continue your descent to Millennium Camp (3,820 m).
Note: Remember that 90% of all accidents occur during the descent, including broken arms and legs. Please pay attention to your feet, as there is a high risk of damaging your toenails.
Change in Elevation: Barafu Camp (4,640 m) — Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — Millennium Camp (3,820 m) Hiking distance: 15 km Hiking time: 8-12 hours
DESCENT FROM MILLENNIUM CAMP TO MWEKA GATE
Mount Kilimanjaro - The camp is located in a tropical rainforest. Upon waking, you will feel relief from the reduced altitude and the satisfaction of reaching the summit. After a warm breakfast, you will head to the park’s exit: Mweka Gate (1,640 m). After your descent, the entire group will gather to congratulate you, followed by an opportunity to share your thoughts on the climb in the guestbook. Finally, you will receive your commemorative certificates at our office and be transferred back to the hotel.
Change in Elevation: Millennium Camp (3,820 m) — Mweka Gate (1,640 m) Hiking distance: 12 km Hiking time: 4-5 hours
