Marangu Route offers a slow, steady climb to each of the daily camps, which has given it the reputation for being the easiest trekking route on Kilimanjaro. Don’t underestimate this trail however, as the approach to the final camp can be physically demanding with roughly 1000 meters of vertical gain on that day alone.

Arrival Day
Moshi Town - Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a warm welcome awaits as the driver escorts you to Keys Hotel in Moshi town for a briefing and an overnight stay.
Moshi – Marangu Gate (1860m) – Mandara Hut (2700m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After enjoying breakfast and a briefing, travel to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (approximately 2 hours), register, and begin the ascent. Trek through the rainforest to reach the Mandara encampment. A detour to Maundi Crater offers a wonderful view of the surroundings, including Northern Tanzania and Kenya. In the rainforest, keep an eye out for towering Eucalyptus trees, diverse birdlife, and Colobus monkeys.
Hike Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - Departing the rainforest glades, follow an ascending trail through the open moorlands to the Horombo encampment. The views of Mawenzi and Kibo’s summit are breathtaking. Look out for giant lobelias and groundsels. The altitude may start to affect you.
Hike Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - As you ascend, pass the last watering point and walk onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Vegetation starts with upper heathland and then fades into a “moonscape.” Enjoy dinner, rest, and prepare for the summit climb.
Hike Kibo Hut to Summit, and down to Horombo Hut
Mount Kilimanjaro - In the early morning (midnight to 2am), begin the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. Continue ascending to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, offering incredible views at every turn. Capture the moment with a photo at the summit to share with friends and family. Descend, pausing for lunch and rest at Kibo before proceeding to the Horombo encampment. The initial climb is in darkness, requiring headlamps or flashlights. It will be very cold until descent begins, so all warm layers are necessary. This is the most challenging part of the trek with numerous switchbacks. Proceeding slowly “pole pole” and maintaining a positive attitude will ensure success!
Horombo Hut (3720m) - Marangu Gate (1860m) – Marangu
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, a steady descent leads through moorland to Mandara Hut. Continue descending along a lush forest path to the National Park gate at Marangu. At lower elevations, conditions may be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. Shorts and t-shirts are likely sufficient (keep rain gear and warmer clothing accessible). A vehicle will meet you at Marangu gate to transport you back to Keys Hotel. Remember to tip your guides and porters. It’s time to celebrate!
