Arrival in Tanzania
Tanzania Moja Adventure & Safaris LTD - Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be greeted and transported to Keys Hotel, located near Moshi town at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Here, you will meet your guide who will provide a briefing on your upcoming tour and assist with bike fitting. If you arrive on a morning or afternoon flight, there will be plenty of time for a quick test ride through the nearby coffee plantations and surrounding villages.
Moshi to Tingatinga Village
Olpopongi - Maasai Cultural Village & Museum - Today’s journey takes you from the lush southern side of Mt. Kilimanjaro to the drier western side. Initially, you will cycle through coffee and banana plantations in the fertile southern Kilimanjaro area. As you head west, the landscape transitions to arid open plains and acacia woodlands, home to diverse wildlife and offering stunning views of Mt. Kilimanjaro. While Moshi is inhabited by the Chagga people, the western Kilimanjaro plains are home to the nomadic Maasai people, coexisting with the local wildlife, hence the name Maasai Lands. The ride will cover both dirt and tarmac roads, concluding at Ngabobo village where you will spend the night.
Tinga Tinga Maasai Village to Simba Farm Lodge
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today’s ride takes you through the Enduimet Wildlife Management Area, one of Tanzania’s hidden treasures. Enduimet borders Amboseli National Park and is a crucial migratory route for wildlife, including African elephants. The area is primarily inhabited by the Maasai, along with significant populations of the Chagga, Meru, and Pare tribes. The ride begins on open plains dotted with acacia trees, becoming greener as you approach Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes where extensive cultivation occurs. The cycling tour concludes at Simba Farm, located atop vast wheat and barley fields overlooking the western Kilimanjaro plains.
Simba Farm Lodge to Nalemoru Village
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today, you will cycle towards the northeast side of Mt. Kilimanjaro to Nalemoru village, near the Kenyan border. Nalemoru village is the starting point for the Rongai route up Kilimanjaro. The ride takes you through beautiful open farmlands with breathtaking views of the western Kilimanjaro plains behind you. You will pass through several vibrant towns as you ascend the mountain’s foothills towards the Rongai forest. The ride concludes at the Snowcap Cottages, nestled on the edge of the Rongai forest. On a clear day, you can enjoy stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
Nalemoru Village to Lake Chala
Lake Chala - Enjoy a downhill ride towards the stunning Lake Chala, a crater lake straddling the Kenya-Tanzania border. Lake Chala is one of Tanzania’s hidden gems, fed entirely by underground springs from Mt. Kilimanjaro. The turquoise blue and green waters are surrounded by diverse flora and fauna. The camp where you will spend the night is located on the edge of this mystical caldera lake, against a dramatic volcanic backdrop, providing the perfect setting to relax and soak in the area’s serenity and tranquility.
Lake Chala to Marangu
Ndoro Waterfall - Today’s ride is short but challenging as you ascend to Marangu village in Kilimanjaro’s foothills. Cycling through Marangu village, you will pass banana and coffee plantations and be greeted by the friendly Chagga people with “Jambo!” Before reaching your camp, take a detour to the iconic Ndoro waterfalls, where you can stretch your legs and walk to the base. A local Chagga guide will share the area’s history, Chagga cave, people, traditions, customs, and the mystical legend of the waterfalls. After refreshing at the waterfalls, complete the final downhill stretch to the camp where you will spend the night.
Marangu Village to Moshi
Mount Kilimanjaro - Conclude your cycling adventure by traversing the villages and plantations on Mt. Kilimanjaro’s slopes. The first half of the ride involves several steep ascents and descents, followed by a gradual downhill ride towards the lively Moshi Town. Cycle through Moshi Town’s suburbs and outskirts on back roads, heading towards Keys Hotel, marking the end of your remarkable 6-day journey around Mt. Kilimanjaro on two wheels. Celebrate the evening with a delightful dinner and sparkling wine to toast your achievement.
