The Annapurna Conservation Area encompasses the entire Annapurna Himal. From the valley floor (below 1000m) to the summit of the Annapurna region, one can transition from lush subtropical areas to stark alpine climbs within days, observing the impact of altitude, topography, and climate on life.
Trails in the lower valleys often meander through land cleared for agriculture, occasionally dipping into the remaining shady broadleaf forests. Further upstream, travelers encounter the stunning rhododendron forests, with their twisted pinkish branches adorned with epiphytic ferns and orchids. In spring, the blooms range from red to pink to white, depending on the altitude. As the trail leads away from the constant roar of the river, the sounds of birdlife, and perhaps the call of a barking deer, become noticeable. The dry and open conifer forests, typically blue pine, can be eerily silent except for the wind whistling through the canopy.
