Impressive tour of the Slum. - Today a very impressive, two hour tour with a guide through Dharavi slam done. This really is a city within a city, full of tireless activity. We have seen up close the huge recycling industry of plastics from scrap cars and metal from soda cans. It is amazing how efficiently waste is treated here. The leatherworking, textile industry and a small soap factory also show how the local economy runs here. It is hard work, often in very tight and challenging circumstances. 6 days a week 12 hours a day for €8 per day. And then hand in €1 a day for food and drinks. What has stuck with me most is the vibrancy. Between the narrow alleys and workshops, you can see where people live, live and where many children play. Mood is springy and warm, a contrast to the sometimes difficult conditions. Area 2.4 square km. And 2million people live and work there! Definitely an unforgettable and educational experience that gives you a nuanced view of this unique community. It also brings your feet down to earth how good we have it.
