- Kanheri Caves - The Kanheri Caves are a group of caves and rock-cut monuments cut into a massive basalt outcrop in the forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, on the island of Salsette in the western outskirts of Mumbai, India. They contain Buddhist sculptures and relief carvings, paintings and inscriptions, dating from the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE. Kanheri comes from the Sanskrit Krishnagiri, which means black mountain. The site is on a hillside, and is accessed via rock-cut steps. The cave complex comprises one hundred and nine caves, carved from the basalt rock and dating from the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE. Kanheri had become an important Buddhist settlement on the Konkan coast by the 3rd century CE.

Ravi great guide - Ravi was a great guide. He gave an un-biased perspective on how the physical monuments to Buddhism here are interconnected with all other religions. We had to rush our tour but Ravi made sure to show us the coolest caves, including many Stupas, paintings, rock cut statues and rooms.

Beautiful monuments - Superb monuments and amazing buildings, The visits to the caves and the Pagoda are magnificent, our guide, plunged us into the origin of these two places. Small meditation session at the pagoda...the construction of the caves from the top of the mountain is impressive

An oasis in Mumbai - a worthwhile trip - A friend and I booked with ‘Get your Guide’ to do this trip and we had a great guide - Shuaib. He was very knowledgeable and friendly and spoke good English. The caves trip involved lots of walking up and down steps and was fascinating to find this site in the middle of a 100 km jungle, situated in Mumbai. Not really suitable for anyone with mobility issues. There is wildlife in the jungle and the park had other places to go see animals, but we didn’t do that. We then travelled by car, ferry and Tuc tuc to the Pagoda. We needed one of our passport numbers to get through security here which I thought was odd. It was a lovely visit, not too many people around, the grounds are beautiful and we even got to go inside the pagoda and meditate for 10 minutes. Inside is not that spectacular but that is the idea! There is a gift shop on way out and the the prices were very reasonable so I bought all my gifts for home in here. It was nice to browse without being hassled too. The ferry trip was interesting with foot passengers and motorbikes all packed in. An excellent day out away from the noise and smog of Mumbai city.

Great tour of the caves and pagoda with Sameer. - I was very pleased how Sameer contacted me the day before to confirm time and pick up. Picked up promptly. He was very helpful with navigating some of the stairs to the caves. The caves were very amazing. Sameer explained the background and took us to a special spot that we were able to meditate and experience nature and calmness. later we went on a ferry ride to go see the global pagoda. I really enjoyed viewing the paintings of the life series of the Buddha. Sameer explained the story behind many of the paintings. I highly recommend this tour. if we would’ve had more time in Mumbai, I would’ve booked more tours directly with him.

Awesome day with guide Sameer - Very well organised tour. The caves and pagoda are breathtaking. Guide Sameer has a lot of knowledge about the places you visit and is very nice company to be in. There is no "fixed schedule" and hence nothing feels rushed. 10/10 experience!

Recommended for any activities in Maharashtra! - Shreeji Tours n Travels is my go-to agent for travel in Maharashtra, and I recommend them for any sightseeing in the Pune, Mumbai, or Aurangabad areas. This was my fourth tour with them, and all were thoroughly enjoyable! Vikrant took are of everything, which allowed me to focus on enjoying the experience and taking pictures.

Stunning day out in Mumbai - Excellent tour with Sameer who was extremely knowledgeable and a very attentive guide. The caves are amazing and should not be missed from a Mumbai trip! Sameer was able to answer all of my questions and was very professional. The Pagoda is stunning and well worth visiting. The dome inside is incredible. I would 100% recommend this tour and Sameer as a guide!

It was a comfortable tour. - India also has wonderful Buddhist cave sites such as Elephanta in Elora, Agenta and Mumbai, but Kangheli Cave is another place to visit. It is about 40 minutes' drive from South Mumbai. According to the Guide, it was made more than 2,000 years ago. It is located in a vast national park. There are also wild leopards in this national park (don't worry, they don't come out during the day).
Conversely, Vipassana Pagoda is a new Buddhist temple with a dome that can accommodate 8,000 people, completed in 2010, so you can experience Buddhism more than 2,000 years apart. I was able to see more than 100 pictures of Buddha's life.
The tour of these two Things to do was very smooth and comfortable.
I can only break English, but they understand that and speak slowly and clearly, and sometimes use a smartphone translation app to guide me in a very friendly way, so even Japanese people can rest assured.
There are fewer Guided tours that speak Japanese these days, but I would recommend this tour for Japanese people who want to visit Kangheli Caves or Vipassana Pagoda (as well as those who are hesitant about speaking English). You can participate with confidence.
