The tour of a lifetime - Let me get the tip done: you meet your tour group in Marienplatz, a touristy market square. Slightly hidden is the tourist information office – you meet up outside. I am serious about this tour being the trip of a lifetime. I was born 11 years after VE Day. WWII history was still recent, and everyone’s dads had served in the war. As kids we played pretend Allies against Nazis, and major magazine LIFE often ran photo essays pertaining to WWII. I am a history buff who has read most books and seen most documentaries about the rise and fall of the Third Reich. Problem was, I never had the time or money to visit Europe till recently. Our tour guide Alun made sure everyone was ready and comfortable with bussing to Dachau on a grey cool day. I thought I knew a lot about concentration camps, but I learned so much by actually visiting the death camp. Dachau was was the first concentration camp established by the Nazi regime, and it served as a ‘model’ for death camps. It’s difficult to understand the sheer weight of human suffering till you experience a site like this. The sun came out in time for an afternoon tour of Third Reich landmarks -- Beer Hall Putsch, brown shirt marches, etc. I was surprised that so many of the original sites are still in place, and in such a small area. I was morbidly thrilled to see Hitler's Munich office building, where he would sometimes stand on the balcony to address the adoring. It is such an ugly and cold place; Albert Speer's architecture was bizarre, and I’m glad some of it is still standing so we can get the full picture of that regime. The tour guide stressed how delicate the balance is for Germans, who live with guilt and ambivalence. Everything was done with taste and concern for the past and the present. Next time I visit Germany I hope to bring my husband on Alun’s tour. I really can’t imagine how the tour could have been better, unless we did an expanded tour with Alun.

The best tour and best guide to Dachau - I believe I could not have had a better tour to Dachau because our guide Alun was beyond the best! He was so knowledgeable and thoughtful. I’ve been an interested reader about WW2 for a while and I could learn a lot on the tour. I recommend it!

AMAZING - Alun was amazing, better than expected based on reviews. He was an incredible wealth of knowledge, kept our group a reasonable size, and did a fantastic job helping us know what to expect. I loved having time as a group and time on our own to see the museum at Dachau. The Third Reich tour that afternoon was a perfect compliment to the morning tour (and it was great to have an hour in between for lunch). A must-do tour even if you only have a day in Munich!!!

Terrific guide! - Alun was extremely knowledgeable and put a difficult time in our history in a way that was easy to understand. An unforeseen circumstance in our day didn’t rattle him and he made everything work out. I highly recommend Alun!

Ask for Alan! - Alan was our tour guide and right off the bat I could tell he’s a very seasoned guide. I have been all over the world and have done all different types of tours. He’s by far one of my favorite. He said he’s been giving tours for 19 years and it shows. The questions were insightful, all while being very respectful about the subject. I would not do this tour without a guide. There was just so much information and it helped give it much more meaning and left a lasting impact. Alan was just an all-around great person.

Amazing, Knowledgeable, and Friendly Tour Guide - Alun was an amazing tour guide. There were only 5 of us on the tour and he was so knowledgeable and made the whole tour seamless from meeting, to the train rides, and the tour itself. He was so friendly and made it easy to ask questions. If/when I go back to Munich, I will absolutely do another tour with Alun!

Fantastic Presentation, Superb Guide! - Our group of 4 adults from the US thoroughly enjoyed our full day tour with Alun. His perspective (being British, but having lived in Germany for nearly 20 years) and personal interest with WWII adds tremendously to the experience. Although he’s presented this material countless times, you feel as if he’s only just discovered the details with his heartfelt passion. We learned more than we expected and left with a deeper understanding of this period in time. Alun’s schedule for the day is very well coordinated- he knows exactly when/where to be for transportation to maximize your time at the memorial site. Don’t loose track of time in the museum- or you will simply not make it to the end before it’s time to rally together again. If you want to focus more on info of the memorial site specifically …. Skip the first 1/2 of the museum which focuses on the greater view of WWII. There is a lot of walking for the full day tour, wear comfortable shoes! We very much appreciated the binder of pictures he presents to add a visual element of the past while walking around Munich. So much history in Munich! We would have had no idea of all the historically significant spots without Alun’s keen eye and information. Lastly, the small group size is fantastic. I highly, highly recommend this tour. We feel fortunate to have experienced this with Alun as our guide. He is a wealth of knowledge!!!
