Executioners, prostitutes, witches—what did these three “professions” share in Munich? In early Munich history, executioners not only worked in the Fragstatt and on the Galgenbergl but also acted as pimps! This popular city tour delves into witch hunts, prostitution, torture, and executions. For instance, why do witches ride broomsticks? And why was the main execution site outside the city?
The tour begins at Neuhauser Tor, where delinquents were led to execution from the city. Following the historic salt road, we arrive at the former Jesuit college, directly into the era of witch hunts. A conversation between Duchess Renata and Jesuit priest Ignatius transports us to the dark 16th century: When the tower collapsed during the construction of the Church of St. Michael, it was believed “that such cursed thunderstorms are caused by wicked women.”
But it wasn’t just witches who faced execution; we hear the tragic tale of the unfortunate goldsmith at the beautiful tower.
A strong gust of wind guides us to Munich’s landmark, the Frauenkirche, where we encounter the devil himself: we discover why the devil assisted the builder in constructing this church, why it is so windy here, and the answer to the global question of the devil’s shoe size.
The witch stories speak of witch’s ointments, broom rides, toad’s tongues, and children’s hands, leading us to the magnificent courtyard where the alchemist Marco Bragadino awaits. The alleged gold maker attempts to showcase his craft. In 1591, he was executed in Munich’s market square, requiring five strikes from the executioner to sever his head from his body! Simultaneously, Munich’s renowned women’s shelter was closed, making prostitution challenging during the Counter-Reformation.
At the Old Town Hall, we pass through the former torture chamber with its gruesome stories on our city tour and reach the Old Court, where Wittelsbach Prince Albrecht introduces us to his bride Agnes Bernauer.
The judicial murder of Bernauer finally leads us from the dark Middle Ages to the recent past, the 1970s. Until the 1972 Olympics, the Platzl was home to Munich’s red-light district, famously sung about by the Spider Murphy gang in the “scandal in the restricted area.”

A unique experience. Highly recommended! - It was a very varied interesting tour. The lady who showed and explained everything to us was charming and funny and could tell exciting stories. The highlight was the two actors who kept slipping into new roles and spontaneously involving the people. History can be so beautiful and so exciting.
Big praise to everyone ❤️

Amazing!! - Fantastic tour! My daughter's 14th birthday and she likes the dark side of history. The tour guide had a wonderfully strong voice so we could hear her even through the city chaos and the group, and in the churches. She knew her material very well and included all of the fascinating details. Great mix of history and fun.

Great and informative guided tour with acting performances - We did this tour with relatives as Munich residents and were totally thrilled.
Even as Munich residents, we learned so much about the city and history at that time. The additional acting performances were yet another perfectly complementary highlight. Highly recommended
