AUTOEUROPE + NATIONAL CAR RENTAL - FLORENCE AIRPORT - AUTOEUROPE + NATIONAL CAR RENTAL FLORENCE AIRPORT TOXIC COMBO FOR THE CUSTOMER I rented a car for a week through AUTOEUROPE with NATIONAL CAR RENTAL. On Monday night my flight to Florence was late, arriving @ 23:40 (Versus 23:00). Instead of waiting for the car rental shuttle to the rental centre, I jumped into a taxi to get there ASAP. On the way tried calling NATIONAL with NO ANSWER. Arrived at the centre Midnight, all the lights were off and a security guard positioned at the front door told me everything was closed for the evening. So I took that same taxi to the nearest hotel, spent the night and came back to NATIONAL the next morning. I explained everything to the NATIONAL agent and she rudely told me I was technically a "NO SHOW" last night and that their agent had left the building around 12:30, she had no sympathy or care about the airport security guard story, and that my reservation was terminated and non-refundable. She then told me I shouldn't rent through AUTOEUROPE and that I needed to speak with them because I am their customer and not NATIONALS. I called AUTOEUROPE and they basically said "sorry" but you're on your own since NATIONAL already received the funds. I rented another car (Not NATIONAL) at the airport at an extortionist last minute rate, with both AUTOEUROPE and NATIONAL wiping their hands clean of a truly messed up situation. I've rented from AUTOEUROPE for over 15 years, probably 3-6 times a year and I'm sitting here wondering what I could have done differently? So, I sent a message to AUTOEUROPE and they directed me to a customer service link that won't recognise my reservation # and therefore no possibility to share this experience formally with that company. Tried doing the same with NATIONAL, and ended up in a Kafka-esque maze of online confusion (+ I'm not technically their customer, right!). In summary, I want nothing from either of these companies but think it's important for other people to be aware that if you rent a car via a 3rd party site like AUTOEUROPE you have to be very careful to read the terms and conditions, and that they broker low deals with vendors based on specific exclusions but when you encounter unforeseeable complications like a plane being delayed or a security guard telling you the building is closed at midnight, then your common sense rights as a consumer are 100% placed on your shoulders solely with ZERO SUPPORT from either of these Two big companies. I hope this story helps someone else out there and please be AWARE of AUTOEUROPE and a completely dysfunctional and rude NATIONAL CAR RENTAL at Florence airport. P.s. I'm in the process of recuperating something from the airline.
