Mount Kenya National Park - Road Trip from Nairobi to Chogoria (3 hours); Overnight in Chogoria Town (Chogoria at 1,550 m). Departing from Nairobi, either from the airport or a hotel, the journey heads north on well-maintained roads to Chogoria town, approximately 225 km away, arriving in time for lunch at the Transit Motel. The drive takes about 3 hours through fertile agricultural lands. The afternoon is spent walking, sightseeing, and acclimatizing around the town at the base of Mount Kenya. After dinner, enjoy an overnight stay at the hotel.
Chogoria - Meru Mount Kenya Lodge (Bandas)
Mount Kenya National Park - Halfway transfer by 4x4 vehicle followed by a long hike to Meru Mount Kenya Bandas. After breakfast, 4×4 Jeeps are used to drive 11 km halfway to the lodge, where the trek begins through a dense bamboo forest for another 11 km to the Bandas for lunch. The afternoon is spent exploring the lodge area with stunning views. After dinner, stay overnight at the Meru Mount Kenya Bandas, which offers single beds, hot showers, and hot meals at the self-catering Bandas (2,900m).
Meru Mount Kenya Bandas to Lake Ellis Camp (3,600m)
Mount Kenya National Park - After a late start, traverse the Mount Kenya slopes from Meru Mount Kenya Bandas (2,900m) to Lake Ellis (3,600m). The 6-day Mt Kenya Hiking Expedition continues at an easy pace after breakfast, passing through lush mountain vegetation with scenic views of the mountainsides. The flora and fauna come alive during the hike, creating unforgettable memories. Lunch is enjoyed en route, reaching Lake Ellis Camp (3,600m) after a trek of over three hours.
Trek to Highland Castle
Mount Kenya National Park - Trek to Highland Castle, approximately 10 km / 5-6 hours. Ascent: +1,100m. Details: The bamboo gives way to enormous podocarpus and pencil cedar forests, and as the climb continues, the Hygenia or Hypercium zone, also known as the rosewood zone (generally found at 2850-3000m), is passed through. The night is spent near the sheer lava cliffs of the “Highland Castle.”
SUMMIT – 4,985m / OLDMOSES CAMP – 3,340m
Mount Kenya National Park - Trek via Pt. Lenana to Oldmoses Camp. Approximately 20 km / 9 hours. Ascent: 749m to the summit / Descent: -1645m to Oldmoses Camp. D5 Details: Just before dawn, guides wake the group and serve hot tea before beginning the final leg of the trek to the summit. The trek starts under the stars, zigzagging up a large scree slope guided by torchlight to reach Pt. Lenana. It’s an exhilarating 3-hour journey to reach the hiker’s summit, Pt Lenana (4985m), in time for sunrise! A further 2-hour descent to Shipton’s camp (4200m) for a hearty breakfast, then down to OldMoses Camp (3340m) for an overnight stay.
MOUNTAIN ROCK LODGE / NAIROBI
Nairobi - Hike to Sirimon gate (2,600m), approximately 10 km / 2 hours. Descent: -740m. Transfer to Nairobi via Mountain Rock Lodge (230 km / 4-5 hours). A short morning trek to Sirimon park gate (2600m) connects with the vehicle for transfer back to Mountain Rock Lodge for a hot shower and lunch before returning to Nairobi.
