Khustai National Park - Genghis Statue

Genghis Khan Statue Complex - Located 54 km from Ulaanbaatar City, the Genghis Khan Statue Complex offers stunning natural views along the Tuul River, a historic site where Genghis Khan’s golden whip was discovered. To honor the “Man of the Millennium,” a 40-meter high stainless steel statue of Genghis Khan on horseback stands as the largest equestrian statue in the world. Within the statue, there is a restaurant, souvenir shop, two museums, and a conference hall. Visitors can ascend to the horse’s head via elevator or stairs to enjoy a panoramic view of the breathtaking landscape.

Khustain Nuruu National Park - Khustain Nuruu National Park is one of three sites selected for the reintroduction of the Przewalski horse (Equus przewalskii), the only wild horse species to survive into modern times, known as Takhi in Mongolian. Approximately 17% of Mongolia’s land is under national environmental protection, with an additional 10% designated as locally protected areas. Khustain National Park is a notable success in Mongolia’s environmental conservation efforts, boasting a population of 300 Takhi, although it faces ongoing challenges.

Terelj National Park

Aryabal Meditation Temple - Constructed in the 1810s by Mongolian and Tibetan artists, the Aryabal Meditation Temple is located in Terelj National Park, 60 km from Ulaanbaatar. Buddhist monks from the Manzushir Monastery frequently visited this temple for meditation. The temple features a Tibetan-style design with a white square-shaped main building and porcelain roofs adorned with Buddhist and religious symbols. In 1937-1939, Mongolian communists destroyed the temple and killed some monks. However, in 2000, Buddhist monks from the Lamiran Temple in Ulaanbaatar initiated a restoration project, completing the work between 2004 and 2007. Monks from Lamiran Temple occasionally conduct religious services here, and the temple is open to visitors and tourists seeking meditation throughout the year.

Turtle Rock - Turtle Rock, known as “Melkhii Khad,” is an impressive granite formation standing 24 meters (79 feet) high, resembling a turtle. Previously called Mungut Khad, it is a must-see photo opportunity on the way to Terelj. Visitors can rent horses, and during the summer, souvenir vendors are present. It’s an excellent starting point for a short walk (about one hour) leading to the Aryaval meditation center or the park’s more secluded areas.
