• plant (often mis-spelled Welwitchia) has only two leaves and can live for over a thousand years. It is found in parts of Namibia and Angola. The easiest place to see it in Namibia is “Welwitschia Drive”, inland from Swakopmund. This can easily be combined, in a round trip, with the “Moon Landscape”. You need to get a permit to visit Welwitschia Drive and one for the Moon Landscape. There are also a few smaller examples at the Petrified Forest about 40km from Khorixas. More info. Although the plant looks as if it has many leaves, it has only two, but as it is so old, it gets shredded by the wind.

To the east of Swakopmund, one can discover one of the world’s most ancient plant species, the Welwitschia Mirabilis, which can survive for many millennia. The Moon landscape, a result of thousands of years of erosion, offers breathtaking views and is undoubtedly one of Namibia’s natural marvels. If you’re in pursuit of witnessing welwitschias, proceed eastwards on the Welwitschia Drive until you reach the Lunar Landscape of eroded hills and valleys, sculpted by the Swakop River. Here, you might consider a short 12km round-trip north to the farm and oasis of Goanikontes, established in 1848. Nestled beside the Swakop River and surrounded by magnificent desert mountains, it makes for a picturesque picnic spot. Goanikontes is an awe-inspiring resort and camping area situated in the lunar landscape of Namibia, within the Namib Naukluft and Dorob National Parks.
