- Himuro Shrine - Next, visit Himuro Shrine, a small yet historically significant shrine dedicated to ice preservation. In ancient times, ice was collected in winter and stored for the imperial court’s summer use, symbolizing wealth and mastery over natural resources. This lesser-known site offers a glimpse into early Japanese daily life and innovation.
- Todai-ji Temple - On the way to Todai-ji Temple, you’ll encounter many deer. Feel free to pause and feed them if you wish. You might wonder why there are so many deer in Nara. The deity enshrined here, Takemikajichi-no-Mikoto, is believed to have arrived in Nara on a sacred deer from Kashima Jingu Shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture. Due to this legend, deer are considered sacred animals, messengers of the gods, and have been carefully protected for many years.
Our destination is Todai-ji Temple, established in 738 AD but opened in 752 AD. The temple has undergone several reconstructions, with the most significant being the Great Buddha Hall’s reconstruction in 1709. The world’s largest bronze statue of Dainichi Nyorai is housed in the Great Buddha Hall.
- Nigatsu-do Temple - In the afternoon, head to Nigatsu-do Hall, where a wooden terrace offers panoramic views of the city. This historic hall also hosts the Omizutori ceremony, a ritual that has continued uninterrupted for over 1,250 years.
- Tamukeyama Hachimangu Shrine - A quieter visit to Tamukeyama Hachimangu Shrine reveals the close relationship between Shinto and Buddhism—two belief systems that have significantly influenced Japanese spiritual life.
- Mt. Wakakusa - Continue towards Mount Wakakusa, an open hillside providing a refreshing contrast to the dense temple complexes. Known for its annual grass-burning festival, this area offers expansive views and an opportunity to experience the natural landscape surrounding Nara.
- Kasuga Grand Shrine - The next stop is Kasuga-taisha, a shrine founded in 768 AD and rebuilt numerous times over the centuries. The interior is notable for its many bronze lanterns, along with the numerous stone lanterns lining the shrine.
- Ukimido - Conclude the main part of the tour at Ukimido Pavilion, a tranquil structure set over a serene pond. This final stop offers a moment to relax and reflect on the day in a peaceful natural setting.
- Harushika Brewery - Optional: For those interested, the day can end with a visit to Harushika Brewery, a long-established brewery offering sake tastings (not included in the tour price). Nara has deep ties to the development of sake brewing, particularly through temple traditions, making this a fitting conclusion to the day.
