• Suigo Sawara Iris Matsuri - Following the cruise, the next stop is the Sawara Matsuri Float Museum, which honors and displays the cultural and sacred Japanese festival traditions, now recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Sawara’s festival takes place every October on the streets of Sawara! Magnificent and intricate floats are paraded through the streets in grand processions, accompanied by singing, dancing, and musical performances. At the museum, visitors can explore the festival’s history dating back to the Edo period, get a close look at two of the floats used, and view numerous festival-related artifacts.
• Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple - This expansive complex houses one of Narita’s oldest and most important Buddhist temples. Founded in 940 CE, it became a renowned pilgrimage destination and is now among Japan’s most visited temples. The complex features beautiful pagodas, worship halls, a tranquil park, and a Calligraphy museum.
• Historic Old Town area in Sawara, Katori - This small yet highly significant area is renowned for its beautifully preserved buildings from the Edo period (1603 - 1868). It is incredibly picturesque and rich in history, making it a must-visit in Sawara! The first stop in this area is a traditional boat cruise on the historic and significant Ono River! Sawara emerged as a vital hub for trade and commerce during the Edo period, with the river flowing through the town’s center serving as a crucial waterway for transporting people and goods. During the boat cruise, visitors will pass under many of Sawara’s charming bridges and view the historic architecture from a unique perspective on the water.
