From Surf to Sip: A Rum-Infused Adventure in Nassau
When the waves are calm and the sun is high, what better way to explore Nassau than through its rich rum history? Join me as I trade my surfboard for a cocktail shaker on a thrilling rum tour through the heart of the island.
A Spirited Start at John Watling’s Distillery
As someone who spends most of his days riding the waves and soaking up the sun, I was intrigued by the idea of diving into the rich history of Nassau through a rum tour. The Nassau Rum Tour promised a blend of history, culture, and, of course, rum. My adventure began at the iconic John Watling’s Distillery, where our guide, Shad, greeted us with a refreshing sample of Pina Colada. Shad, with his vibrant personality and knack for storytelling, whisked us away into the world of Bahamian and rum history.
The distillery itself was a charming blend of tradition and craftsmanship, and as we wandered through its halls, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of connection to the island’s past. Our first full-sized cocktail, the Skylarkin, was a delightful concoction of John Watling’s Amber Rum, coconut rum, coconut pulp, coconut water, and nutmeg. Paired with conch fritters and wings, it was the perfect introduction to the flavors of the Bahamas.
Moonshine and More at Graycliff
With our spirits high, we set off on foot to the Graycliff Moonshine Company. Shad continued to regale us with tales of Bahamian history and culture, his voice shifting seamlessly between accents, adding a theatrical flair to the experience. At Graycliff, we sampled local moonshine, a potent 190 proof that surprisingly went down smooth. The moonshine was followed by a tasting of local wines, each sip offering a new layer of flavor and complexity.
The walk between stops was a journey in itself, with Shad painting a vivid picture of Nassau’s vibrant past. As someone who thrives on the thrill of discovery, I found myself captivated by the stories of pirates and bootleggers who once roamed these streets. It was a reminder that there’s always more to an island than its beaches.
Secrets of The Lucerne Speakeasy
Our final destination was a hidden gem in downtown Nassau, a speakeasy known as The Lucerne. The entrance was discreet, tucked away behind a cipher-locked door past a tattoo parlor. Inside, the ambiance was reminiscent of the prohibition era, a perfect setting for our final rum tasting.
Here, we were treated to several rum samples and cocktails, including the opportunity to craft our own Rum Runner. The experience was hands-on and engaging, a fitting end to a day of exploration and indulgence. Shad’s storytelling continued to entertain, his authenticity and humor making the tour unforgettable.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that the Nassau Rum Tour was more than just a tasting experience. It was a journey through time, a chance to connect with the island’s history and culture in a way that was both educational and entertaining. For anyone looking to explore Nassau beyond its beaches, this tour is a must.
