It is nourished by several small rivers and a canal, and connects to the sea through a narrow channel to the north, near the city of Negombo. The lagoon is encircled by a densely populated area featuring rice paddies, coconut plantations, and grasslands.
- Negombo Fish Market - The Negombo Fish Market is fascinating as it takes place directly on the beach, with fresh catches from fishing boats. Fishermen can be seen untangling their nets, playing with their children, and laying out miles of fish to dry in the sun along Negombo’s shore.
Along the coast, one can find stretches of shark, tuna, sardine, mackerel, and other fish. Live crabs are also available for purchase at the stalls outside the market. There are makeshift open sheds along the coast where fishermen organize their boats and nets, and their families may be seen relaxing in the shade.

Dutch Fort - Negombo Fort, a small yet significant fort in Negombo, is located approximately 30 km (19 mi) north of Colombo. It was constructed by the Portuguese to protect Colombo. During its time, the fort at Negombo was likely the next in strategic importance after Colombo, Jaffna, and Galle. The original Portuguese fort was a modest structure, described by João Ribeyro as;
“Negombo was only a square enclosed by walls, with two redoubts and five guns. A Captain and a few men, with a Chaplain were stationed there”
It was seized by Dutch forces led by Philip Lucasz in February 1640. The Portuguese made several attempts to reclaim it before succeeding in December 1643. They then fortified the defenses and managed to hold the fort until it was recaptured by the Dutch under François Caron’s command in January 1644. The original bastions were destroyed by Dutch cannons during the siege. - Negombo - Negombo is a city on Sri Lanka’s west coast, north of the capital, Colombo. Near the waterfront, the remnants of the 17th-century Dutch Fort now serve as a prison. Negombo Lagoon, lined with fishermen’s huts, flows into the Dutch-era Hamilton Canal, which leads south to Colombo. The neoclassical St. Mary’s Church, completed in the 1920s, features a ceiling adorned with vibrant religious paintings.

St. Mary’s Church - The Christian faith has significantly influenced Negombo since the Portuguese occupation. It is often referred to as “Little Rome” due to the numerous churches in the city.
Construction of the church began in 1874 and was completed, after a lengthy pause, in 1922. The art and architecture of this church, along with a few others in Sri Lanka, showcase the cultural blend of European practices with Sri Lankan art and architecture during the early 20th century. - Sri Muthu Mari Amman Temple - Sri Muthumariamman Temple (Tamil: ஸ்ரீ முத்துமாரியம்மன் கதிர்வேலாயுத சுவாமி கோவில்) is a renowned Mariamman temple in Negombo, reflecting the Dravidian architectural style. The temple maintains a traditional appearance. The granite engravings in the temple are highly regarded by the Negombo Tamils as one of the most powerful temples, where pujas and offerings are believed to benefit the community.
- Negombo Beach - Situated just six kilometers from Sri Lanka’s International airport, Negombo is a predominantly Christian fishing town with narrow streets, small boutiques, and numerous historic churches, tracing back to the Portuguese arrival. Negombo is an ideal location to experience traditional Sri Lankan fishing methods, such as the outrigger canoe and the swift catamaran. The lagoon is famous for its pomfret, lagoon crab, and lobster during the season. As a resort town, it is dotted with many hotels and restaurants, and the famous lagoon offers rides in an outrigger sailing canoe to experience the authentic fisherman’s life.
- Angurukaramulla Temple - Known as “Little Rome,” Negombo is a Catholic stronghold in Sri Lanka, with over 90 percent of its population being Catholics. There are more than 50 churches and shrines within the Negombo municipality. The majority of Catholic Bishops and the only Cardinal in Sri Lanka have originated from this Catholic stronghold.
Although Buddhists are relatively few in Negombo – less than ten percent – their religious devotion is noteworthy. The esteemed Buddhist leader and patriot Brahmachari Walisingha Harischandra was born in Thimbirigaskatuwa, Negombo. A prominent school in Negombo, Harischandra Vidyalaya, is named after him.
The beautiful Budu Ge there contains exquisite sculptural works and paintings depicting the life of Buddha and Jathaka stories. Its Pilima Ge features significant Buddhist events in Sri Lanka and life-size images of all the Sinhala kings from Vijaya to Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe.
- Dutch Canal - The Hamilton Canal, also known as the Dutch Canal, is a 14.5 km (9.0 mi) waterway connecting Puttalam to Colombo, passing through Negombo in Sri Lanka. Constructed by the British in 1802 and completed in 1804, it was designed to drain saltwater from the Muthurajawela wetlands. The canal was named after Gavin Hamilton, the Government Agent of Revenue and Commerce.
