Negombo Fish Market - The Negombo Fish Market is unique as it takes place directly on the beach, with fresh catches from fishing boats. Fishermen can be seen untangling nets, playing with their children, and laying out fish to dry in the sun along Negombo’s shore. The coast is lined with shark, tuna, sardine, mackerel, and other fish. Live crabs are also available at stalls outside the market. Open sheds on the coast serve as places for fishermen to sort their boats and nets, with families often relaxing in the shade.

Negombo Lagoon - This large estuarine lagoon in south-west Sri Lanka is fed by small rivers and a canal. It connects to the sea via a narrow channel near Negombo city. The surrounding area is densely populated with rice paddies, coconut plantations, and grassland.

Dutch Fort - Approximately 30 km north of Colombo, Negombo Fort was a significant fortification built by the Portuguese to protect Colombo. Initially a weak structure, it was captured by Dutch forces in 1640, retaken by the Portuguese in 1643, and recaptured by the Dutch in 1644. The Dutch rebuilt it in 1672 with a pentagonal design. In 1796, the British occupied it without resistance and later demolished it to build a prison. Today, only a section of the eastern rampart and an arched gateway remain, still used as a prison.

St. Mary’s Church - Known as “Little Rome” due to its many churches, Negombo has a strong Christian influence from the Portuguese era. Construction of St. Mary’s Church began in 1874 and was completed in 1922. The church’s art and architecture reflect a blend of European and Sri Lankan styles from the early 20th century.

Sri Muthu Mari Amman Temple - This temple, a prominent Mariamman temple in Negombo, showcases Dravidian architectural styles. Its granite engravings are highly regarded by the Negombo Tamils, and it is considered a powerful place for pujas and offerings.

Negombo Beach - Just six kilometers from Sri Lanka’s international airport, Negombo is a predominantly Christian fishing town with narrow streets, small boutiques, and historic churches. It offers a glimpse into traditional Sri Lankan fishing methods and is a resort town with many hotels and restaurants. The lagoon is famous for its pomfret, lagoon crab, and lobster.

Dutch Canal - The Hamilton Canal, also known as the Dutch Canal, is a 14.5 km waterway connecting Puttalam to Colombo through Negombo. Built by the British between 1802 and 1804, it was designed to drain saltwater from the Muthurajawela wetlands and is named after Gavin Hamilton, a Government Agent.

Angurukaramulla Temple - Despite being a Catholic stronghold, Negombo is home to the Angurukaramulla Temple, showcasing the religious diversity of the area. The temple features fine sculptures and paintings depicting the life of Buddha and Jathaka stories. It also contains life-size images of Sinhala kings, highlighting important Buddhist events in Sri Lanka.
