The name Manasalu originates from the Sanskrit term ‘MANASA,’ signifying the spirit of the mountains. This trek, officially opened to tourists in 1991, provides a unique chance to explore a relatively “untouched” region. This remarkable journey encircles the entire massif, offering insights into the cultures of ethnic Nepalese tribes and the followers of both Hinduism and Buddhism. However, mountaineering expeditions have long had access to the area. In 1950, a group led by H.W. Tillman trekked from Thonje to Bimtang, and Col. Jimmy Roberts crossed the Larkya La (Pass) in search of an intriguing mountain to climb. Manaslu (8,163m) was attempted by Japanese expeditions annually from 1952 until 1956, when the first successful ascent was achieved. Known as the “Japanese Mountain,” much of the information about the area was available in Japanese.
