Uchisar Castle - This impressive structure, reminiscent of ancient skyscrapers, is situated on the most prominent hill in the region. It offers a commanding view of the entire center of Cappadocia and is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets. Known as “Uç Hisar” during the Ottoman era, it was the seat of an Uç bey. During the tour, visitors can capture stunning photos from a nearby viewing platform and be mesmerized by the tales of civilizations shared by the guide, wishing time could stand still.
Zelve Open Air Museum - This museum showcases Cappadocia’s monastic life, 12th-century fresco art, exquisite church decorations, and Sekko drawing, an early form of decoration. Established by the renowned Bishop Basilius of Kayseri, it is one of the region’s most frequented museums. The monastic lifestyle, which partially ended the ascetic way of life, became a significant school where monks began living in healthier conditions under Basilius’s guidance. The Zelve Open Air Museum is a unique place to explore 12th-century Sekko and fresco art in detail.
Love Valley - Known as the Valley of Love since the 1990s, its original name is Baghdere, once famous for its vineyards. This scenic spot is known for its unique formations and is popular for ATV tours, wedding photography, hot air balloon watching, and photo safaris. The valley gained fame after a traveler’s blog highlighted its heart-shaped formation seen from a balloon. It remains a favorite on Cappadocia travel itineraries, thanks to social media posts by visiting celebrities.
Fairy Chimneys - These are the most famous fairy chimneys in Cappadocia, attracting photography enthusiasts and serving as one of the ascetic living spaces in the region. They still bear traces of the ascetic monks’ cell life and provide a natural studio for stunning images, especially between 5:00 and 7:00 when balloons fill the sky.
Avanos - “Even the blind know the way to Avanos by the pottery shards,” said the famous Aşık Seyrani from Develi. Indeed, Avanos is synonymous with pottery. The area is dotted with trees adorned with pottery, creating landscapes that declare, “Our fruit is pottery.” In Avanos, pottery-making is a vital skill, and those who can’t make pottery are not considered true locals. Visitors can hear the story of this craft from a potter who shapes clay on the wheel and captures hearts.
Devrent Valley - This valley is home to numerous animal and non-living figures, especially camels, and is a land of fairy chimneys that inspire dreams and transport visitors to a fantastical realm. A short walk through the valley reveals fascinating formations that will keep cameras busy, offering a delightful and intriguing experience.
South Tour in Cappadocia
Goreme Panorama - The tour begins at the Goreme Panoramic Viewpoint, the highest point in Goreme, offering a breathtaking view of the village, rock hotels, nearby valleys, and Uchisar Castle. The guide provides detailed insights into the region’s geological and historical background.
Kaymakli Underground City - Cappadocia’s underground cities are a unique feature, formed due to the thick layers of soft tuff. These cities provided refuge from raids, with 36 discovered in total. Initially small villages, they expanded during the Byzantine period to accommodate up to thirty thousand people. The Derinkuyu underground city, meaning “deep well” in Turkish, has eight floors and extends 55.5 meters deep. It includes rooms for livestock, storage, dining, kitchens, wine cellars, a church, a missionary school, a confessional, and a font. The ancient ventilation shafts still function, and the tunnels and halls are well-lit.
Ihlara Valley - Ihlara is a stone canyon that splits the plain into two “banks” like a deep ravine. It stretches about 14 kilometers, with depths reaching up to 150 meters in some areas. The canyon runs from the village of Ihlara to Selime, with the Melendiz River flowing at its base. Ihlara served as a haven for Christian monks, with numerous rock-cut churches and residential caves. The walking tour through the valley covers 3.5 km.
LUNCH BY THE MELENDIZ RIVER
Selime Monastery - Located on the northern edge of the Ihlara Canyon, Selime Monastery is the highest rock-cut monastery in Cappadocia, offering stunning views. It is notable for showcasing all the components of a monastery in one composition.
Pigeon Valley - The tour guide will explain the history of Cappadocia, and visitors will have free time to enjoy the viewpoint.
