- Fairy Chimneys - Fairy chimneys are a remarkable geological feature located in Turkey’s Cappadocia region. These tall, cone-shaped rock formations have been sculpted by erosion over time. Typically, the base of a fairy chimney is wider than its top, and they are composed of a hard rock called tuff, which is more resistant to erosion than the surrounding softer rock.
Fairy chimneys are created through a combination of volcanic activity and erosion. The tuff rock originates from volcanic ash and pumice erupted from nearby volcanoes, later shaped by erosion. Over time, the softer rock layers surrounding the tuff eroded away, leaving the more durable tuff rock standing.
Fairy chimneys are a popular tourist attraction in Cappadocia, where visitors can explore the area and appreciate the region’s unique natural beauty. Many fairy chimneys have been carved into homes, churches, and other structures, offering a glimpse into the historical lifestyle of the area’s past inhabitants.
- Pasabag - Monks Valley (Paşabağ Vadisi) in Cappadocia is renowned for its perfect fairy chimneys, crafted from ancient lava, ash, and basalt. Often referred to as Pasabag, Monks Valley is famous for its hiking opportunities among the boulders and hills surrounding the area. For those looking to relax, the small village by the road offers stalls serving hot spiced wine in winter and freshly-squeezed juices in summer. There are also a few cafes for a quick bite and shops selling Cappadocia textiles and artwork. Monks Valley was once home to hermetic monks who resided in the smaller cones atop the upper sections of the fairy chimneys. A Simeon monks’ hermitage was also located here, and today visitors can still see the chapel dedicated to Saint Simeon, who, tired of the attention he received in 5th century Aleppo for his miraculous abilities, retreated to the top of the highest fairy chimney he could find, descending only occasionally.
- Kaymakli Underground City - Kaymaklı is a city carved deep into the soft volcanic rock of the Cappadocia region. There are approximately 100 underground cities in the area, though only a few are open to the public. Kaymaklı is the largest among them, with an estimated population of 3,500 people in its heyday.
Situated beneath a hill known as the Citadel of Kaymaklı, the city comprises 8 underground levels with low, narrow, sloping passageways. The city is organized around ventilation shafts that provide air. Early inhabitants chose to live underground at times to protect themselves from the heat and marauding tribes that frequently passed through the region seeking to attack and plunder. The city was opened to visitors in 1964, although only 4 of the 8 levels are accessible. The first level was designated for stables, the second level housed a church and living areas, and the third level contained kitchens and storage.
- Goreme - This unique town, located in the heart of Turkey, serves as an excellent starting point for exploring some of Cappadocia’s most spectacular attractions. From the fairy chimneys in Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia to the incredible cave churches at the Göreme Open-Air Museum, this region offers a variety of breathtaking sights.
- Goreme Open-Air Museum - The Goreme Open-Air Museum resembles a vast monastic complex composed of numerous refectory monasteries placed side-by-side, each with its own remarkable church. It is the first site any traveler in Cappadocia should visit, as it stands in the very center of the region with easy access from all directions. It is only a 15-minute walk from the center of Göreme village. The museum contains the finest rock-cut churches, adorned with beautiful frescoes that retain their original vibrant colors. It also showcases unique examples of rock-hewn architecture and fresco techniques. The Goreme Open-Air Museum has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
The area covered by this Open-Air Museum forms a coherent geographical entity and represents historical unity. There are eleven refectories within the Museum, each associated with a church, featuring rock-cut tables and benches. Most of the churches in Göreme date back to the 10th, 11th, and 12th centuries.
- Avanos - The charming town of Avanos in Cappadocia is renowned for its distinctive red earthenware pottery, a tradition that dates back to the Hittites in the Bronze Age.
Located on the banks of Turkey’s longest river, the Kızılırmak (Red River), the picturesque old town overlooks the red silt of the river, which has been both the lifeblood and the destiny of Avanos. Small pottery workshops still line the narrow streets of the old town, where visitors can learn to throw a pot and purchase local ceramics. Larger warehouses are also found on the town’s outskirts.
Avanos serves as a great base for exploring the rest of Cappadocia: the fairy chimneys at Zelve, the underground cities of Ozkonak, Derinkuyu, and Kaymaklı, and the rock churches with their Byzantine frescoes in the Göreme National Park.
- Cavusin - The tranquil Cappadocian village of Çavuşin is known for three things: beautiful churches, abandoned rock houses, and excellent hiking opportunities. The area of the village where people currently reside is peaceful, with most locals working in agriculture. The little cafe by the mosque is a popular local gathering spot. At the top of the cliff overlooking the village, visitors can find the famous Basilica of St John the Baptist. Dating back to the 5th century AD, it is one of the region’s oldest cave churches and also one of the largest in Cappadocia. Inside, visitors can admire the chapel’s grand arches and images of crosses and stars. In the village, there is also a lower church to explore, dedicated to the renowned Cappadocian general Nicephorus Phocas, who triumphed in the Byzantine era. This church dates back to 960 AD. The village of Çavuşin is also the starting point for hikes into Rose Valley, Red Valley, and Meskendir Valley.
- Devrent Valley - This is a place to let your imagination run wild in a seemingly lunar landscape with rock formations resembling animals.
The Devrent Valley, also known as Imagination Valley, lacks the cave churches, Byzantine frescoes, or Roman citadel ruins that are famous throughout the rest of Cappadocia. However, it boasts an extraordinary landscape shaped by nature to inspire laughter, wonder, and exploration.
Only a 10-minute drive from Göreme, between Avanos and Ürgüp, the valley resembles a rock-formed zoo. Walking the trail, visitors will encounter a landscape filled with shapes resembling snakes, camels, seals, dolphins, and whatever else their imagination conjures from the twisting, curving rocks. Perhaps even a dragon. There are also small fairy chimneys, the rock pillars so characteristic of Cappadocia.
