Ozkonak Underground City - Overview of Tatlarin (Acıgöl) Underground City
A small portion of this expansive underground city has been cleared. Currently, only the first two levels are accessible to visitors.
This underground city, which features two known churches, has a significant number of storage areas. The interior spaces are quite spacious. These factors suggest that the city might have served as a military garrison or a monastic complex rather than a civilian settlement.
- Lake Tuz - Known in antiquity as Tatta, Tuz Gölü is an enclosed lake surrounded by plateaus.
The lake is fed by limited sources, including the Melendiz River (Aksaray) and the Pecenekozu River (Sereflikochisar). During summer, evaporation causes the lake to dry up, leaving a salt layer approximately 30 centimeters thick over the mud. In winter, water returns, but the depth does not exceed 2 meters at its deepest point. Despite being the second-largest lake in Turkey, it has a salinity level of 33%, making it one of the world’s most saline lakes, which prevents farming in the area.
As a result, Tuz Gölü’s salt is among the richest globally, producing 300,000 tons annually, accounting for 60% of Turkey’s total salt production.
Salt can only be harvested in July and August when the lake dries. To ensure purity, salt is collected only from areas where the layer exceeds 6 centimeters in thickness.
- Pigeon Valley - Cappadocia’s wind-carved volcanic tufa has formed an impressive array of valleys, adorned with towering “fairy chimneys” and striking rock formations. Named after the pigeonholes carved into the tops of its fairy chimneys, Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi) is breathtaking, and a must-see for visitors to Cappadocia.
