Buddhism originated in the northeastern regions of India between the late 6th century and the early 4th century BC, an era marked by significant social evolution and heightened religious fervor. Bodhgaya, a revered site where the Buddha embarked on his journey to enlightenment about 2500 years ago, lies beside the Phalgu River. As one of the world’s most vital Buddhist shrines, it’s the place where, under the shade of a banyan tree known as the Bodhi Tree, Gautama achieved the ultimate wisdom and became the Buddha, the Awakened One. Within this sacred space stands the grand Mahabodhi Temple and the historical Tree, grown from the original’s seedling, remaining within the temple area. The temple itself is a beautiful synthesis of architectural styles from numerous epochs, cultures, and traditions.
