Explore the Red Fort, the primary residence of the Mughal Emperors for nearly 200 years until 1856. Constructed by the fifth Mughal Emperor, Shahjahan, the fort suffered further damage during the 1857 revolt when the British used it as a garrison. The British tried the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, in this fort before exiling him to Rangoon in 1857. The Red Fort’s historical importance is highlighted by its role in the annual flag hoisting on 15th August, marking Indian Independence Day.
- Qutub Minar - Also visit Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Delhi’s Mehrauli region. This 240-foot high minaret with five storeys was built as a victory tower in 1193 by Qutub-ud-din-Aibak after defeating Delhi’s last Hindu king. At the tower’s base is India’s first mosque, the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. Within the same complex stands the Iron Pillar, which has remarkably resisted rust over time. Legend has it that if you can encircle the pillar with your hands while standing with your back to it, your wish will be fulfilled!
- Humayun’s Tomb - Humayun’s Tomb, another UNESCO World Heritage site, contains the tomb of Humayun, commissioned by his first wife and chief consort, Empress Bega Begum. The site was selected for its proximity to the Nizamuddin Dargah, the mausoleum of the esteemed Sufi saint of Delhi, Nizamuddin Auliya, who was highly regarded by Delhi’s rulers. Besides the remains of Humayun and Empress Bega Begum, the tomb complex also houses the remains of several later Mughals.
