For over six decades, street artists and performers from northern India resided in a slum near Shadipur station in West Delhi. This area, known as Kathputli Colony, was home to approximately 2,800 families, including magicians, snake charmers, acrobats, singers, dancers, henna artists, jugglers, and more.

Kathputli inspired author Salman Rushdie to feature it in his acclaimed novel, Midnight’s Children. In Hindi, “Kathputli” translates to “puppet.”

In late 2017, the residents of Kathputli faced their worst fears when the entire area was demolished to make way for new housing, leaving some residents homeless.
