Time management - We were a family of nine people on a one-day private luxury bus tour of Agra from Delhi. Majestic Taj Tours (MTT) were excellent in communicating prior to our visit. We had agreed a bespoke itinerary one month before the tour, including (1) the Taj Mahal, (2) Agra Fort and (3) the SOS Wildlife Centre. The Wildlife Centre replaced the Baby Taj on their standard itinerary. A guide and tickets were included, taking into account the number of OCI card holders and children. The driver was fast, and we did a lot in one day. The ‘Maharaja’ bus was comfortable. There were some issues; it may be of help to other travellers to know these. In chronological order, these were: - At 7pm on the evening before our 6am start, an e-mail was sent informing us that Majestic Taj Tours (MTT) had been unable to reach Wildlife SOS. We WhatsApp'd Wildlife SOS at 6am on the day using their details on Google Maps and they returned contact at 7am, offering to fit us in at 4pm. It is unclear why MTT were unable to make contact with Wildlife SOS in the preceding month, in contrast to the quick reply that we received, nor why we were informed so late. - Jet lag and traveling with a five-year-old are a challenge, and taking food and bags into the Taj Mahal is not allowed. However, it is possible to fit in a cereal bar on the short walk or golf cart transfer between the main road and the entrance. - Our tour guide kindly bought four extra water bottles for us before entering the site, as we had forgot to bring them from the bus. Shoe covers were provided for walking on the Taj Mahal itself. Whilst on the site, our tour guide politely informed me that the water bottles and shoe covers had to be paid for and he would collect the money for these later. Paying for the water bottles is reasonable, but I feel that the shoe covers should be included in the Taj Mahal tour cost. - Cash payment was made to the tour manager, who came to the buffet restaurant after the Taj Majal. A request for a tripadvisor review was made at this time, which was too early. - Our tour guide offered to add in two additional places. One of these was a marble table making shop en route, which showed the underlying craftsmanship. My five-year-old enjoyed the game of guessing how many pieces were made to make the decorations, and seeing how the tabletop was made to glow by having light bulbs underneath. However, this severely reduced time for later activities. We stopped for a short time on the roadside at the back of the Red Fort, where one of the buildings was pointed out. It was explained that most of the Red Fort is occupied by the military and not visible to the public. As our Wildlife SOS booking was at 4pm, we felt we had to make a choice between the Red Fort and Wildlife SOS. We decided to see the Red Fort very briefly. Majestic Taj Tours paid the entrance fee which was included in our tour cost, which they would otherwise have retained. - The Wildlife SOS centre is very different, a real eye-opener and well worth a visit. They ask for a INR 2,000 donation per adult, a total of INR 10,000 for our group. On paying this, they asked for half this amount for each child which we declined. Overall, we had an amazing trip but there are a few things for travellers to keep in mind. These are to ensure time management, decline additional sites, contact the Wildlife SOS centre directly, eat a quick snack between the tour bus and the Taj Mahal and remember water bottles. The SOS Wildlife Centre is well worth a visit, but the requested voluntary donation amount is high for larger groups.
