The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Shah Jahan in 1631 to be built in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, a Persian princess who passed away on June 17 of that year while giving birth to their 14th child, Gauhara Begum. Construction began in 1632, and the mausoleum was completed in 1643, with the surrounding buildings and garden finished five years later. The imperial court documents Shah Jahan’s grief after Mumtaz Mahal’s death, illustrating the love story that inspired the Taj Mahal.

Agra Fort is a historic fort in the city of Agra, India. It served as the main residence of the Mughal Dynasty emperors until 1638, when the capital was moved from Agra to Delhi. Before being captured by the British, the last Indian rulers to occupy it were the Marathas.

The Tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah is a Mughal mausoleum in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Often described as a “jewel box” and sometimes called the “Baby Taj,” it is considered a draft of the Taj Mahal.
Note: Visiting Itimad-Ud-Daulah (Baby Taj) is optional, based on travelers’ preferences.
