- Devil’s Hole State Park - Meet the guide at Devil’s Hole State Park. Complimentary parking is available (no oversized RV parking). The meeting point is at the restroom building on the park’s north end.
Devil’s Hole Park provides stunning views of the Niagara River, the New York Power Authority Dam, and the Lewiston/Queenston Bridge to Canada. The tour will begin with a brief overview and a discussion on hiking safety.
The hike starts with a descent of over 400 stone steps into the Niagara River Gorge. From there, the path leads south towards Devil’s Hole.
- Devil’s Hole State Park - Initially, the hiking path is wide and flat, but it can become muddy after rain. As the trail narrows, it becomes rocky and slopes into the gorge. The guide will offer tips on safely navigating this section. Upon reaching Devil’s Hole, the historical significance of the area will be discussed.
- Whirlpool State Park - The hike continues towards the Whirlpool, where participants will learn about the old Niagara River Gorge Railway. The trail includes navigating large rocks and tree roots, with views of rock slides and the Niagara River. As the Whirlpool approaches, the sound of Class 5 rapids becomes evident. There will be stops for photos and water breaks, capturing the swirling aqua-blue water.
- Whirlpool State Park - At Butterfly Rock Landing at the Whirlpool, enjoy free time for personal exploration and experience the powerful rapids. Relax by the blue-green river water, watch the jet boats, or observe the Aero Car above.
The guide will gladly take photos of the group using personal phones or cameras.
- Whirlpool State Park - The return journey involves a half-mile hike to the Whirlpool stone staircase, followed by a climb of over 400 stone steps to the gorge’s rim. This is the most challenging part of the hike, but there will be ample opportunities to rest and hydrate.
- Whirlpool State Park - Once the group reaches the top of the stairs, a half-mile hike along the upper rim of the gorge leads to the Whirlpool overlook, offering views of Butterfly Rock below and the explored areas.
- Devil’s Hole State Park - The final stop includes a restroom break at the small Whirlpool Park visitors center. From there, two options are available to return to the Devil’s Hole parking lot:
Option 1: The guide will accompany the group on a free shuttle bus back to the starting point at Devil’s Hole, saving time and energy, especially for those who are tired or wish to save time.
Option 2: Participants can hike along the upper rim gorge trail back to the Devil’s Hole parking lot independently. This one-mile hike on a wide dirt path adds 30-45 minutes to the tour.
