- Nikko Toshogu - This is the most famous shrine among “the Shrines and Temples of Nikko,” a prominent World Heritage site in Japan. It is the resting place of Ieyasu Tokugawa, the great Shogun who initiated the prosperous Edo Period. The majority of the shrine complex seen today was reconstructed in the 17th century. It comprises 55 buildings, including 8 national treasures and 34 listed buildings. The highlights include lavish carvings that are lacquered and vibrantly colored, showcasing craftsmanship from across the country. Be sure to see the “Sleeping Cat,” a symbol of peace, and the “Three Monkeys” with their “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” poses!
- Kanmangafuchi Abyss - This small gorge, created by an eruption of nearby Mt. Nantai, is a uniquely picturesque location. Approximately 70 Jizos are lined up along the south bank of the river. This group of Jizos is known as “Baké-Jizo” because they are said to be uncountable; each attempt to count them results in a different number. Legend has it that the Chinese character “Kanman” on an upstream cliff was inscribed by Kobo Daishi, a master calligrapher, by throwing his brush. The Nikko Botanical Garden is located on the opposite shore of the Jizos, offering visitors the chance to enjoy the scenic beauty of spring’s verdant greens, autumn colors, and snow-covered Jizos.
- Lake Chuzenji - Lake Chuzenji is Tochigi’s largest lake, surrounded by 25 kilometers of stunning natural beauty. In the late 19th to early 20th centuries, it was a popular summer retreat for foreigners. The villas of the French and Belgian embassies can still be found here. Visitors can enjoy the lake’s seasonal attractions. Walking trails encircle the water’s edge, and an excursion boat is available on the lake. The views are breathtaking, especially during the cherry blossom or azalea blooms, or when the autumn leaves change color. The “Koyo-meguri” tour, which showcases the autumn leaves reflecting on the lake, is highly recommended.
- Kegon Falls - Kegon Waterfall is the most renowned of Nikko’s 48 waterfalls. Water from Lake Chuzenji plunges 97 meters straight down to the rocks below, creating a dynamic and artistic natural spectacle. A special lift takes visitors to the basin, where the power and roar of the water can be experienced up close! The waterfall is impressive in any season, but it is particularly stunning when surrounded by fresh green leaves in May, house martins in June, or the “12 falls” - small streams of the frozen waterfall covered in blue ice - during January and February.
- Nikko Futarasan Shrine - Futarasan Shrine is located next to Toshogu in central Nikko. It is much older than its more opulent neighbor, having been founded in 782 by Shodo Shonin, the Buddhist monk who introduced Buddhism to Nikko and also founded the nearby Rinnoji Temple. Futarasan Shrine is dedicated to the deities of Nikko’s three most sacred mountains: Mount Nantai, Mount Nyoho, and Mount Taro. Futarasan is another name for Mount Nantai, the most prominent of the three mountains.
- Rinno-ji Temple - This collection of Buddhist temples in Sannai includes the largest wooden structure in the Nikkozan area. The 38 buildings on the premises, including the Sanbutsudo Hall with three giant Buddha statues, are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The “Gohan-shiki,” a rice-eating ceremony held at Rinnoji every year on April 2nd, is said to bring health and fortune to participants. Be sure to visit the treasure house and the nearby Japanese garden “Shoyoen.” “Shoyoen” is especially photogenic during the autumn leaves season.
