Exploring Ninh Binh: A Day of Adventure and Culture in Vietnam
Eager to explore Vietnam’s natural and historic wonders, I embarked on a small group tour in Ninh Binh. From climbing the towering pitons to cycling through serene rice fields, the day was filled with adventure and cultural insights.
Climbing the Pitons: A Workout with a View
As someone who thrives on adventure and exploration, the hike up the pitons in Ninh Binh was a perfect start to the day. Our small group, led by the ever-punctual Hua, embarked on a two-hour drive from Hanoi, with a brief stop at a souvenir shop that doubled as a restroom break. The pitons, towering finger-like rocks, beckoned us with their promise of panoramic views.
The climb was no small feat, with 500 steep steps carved into the rock. It was a workout that tested our endurance, but the reward at the top was worth every bead of sweat. The view of Ninh Binh and the surrounding limestone mountains was breathtaking. For those with a bit more energy, there was the option to explore both the left and right forks at the summit, offering different perspectives of the landscape.
Cycling Through Rural Vietnam
After the invigorating climb, we transitioned to a more leisurely activity: cycling through the rice fields. The old-fashioned bikes, with their lack of gears and questionable brakes, added a touch of nostalgia to the experience. As we pedaled along the flat terrain, we were treated to glimpses of rural Vietnamese life. Families worked together in the fields, marking their boundaries with simple sticks, a testament to the communal spirit that thrives in these parts.
The gentle ride was a welcome change of pace, allowing us to soak in the serene beauty of the countryside. It was a reminder of the simple joys of travel, where the journey itself becomes the destination. For those who preferred to relax, there was the option to unwind at a local restaurant, but I couldn’t resist the allure of the open road.
A River Journey and a Temple Visit
Lunch was a delightful affair, with an array of Vietnamese dishes that satisfied our hunger and fueled us for the next adventure: a river trip through Tam Coc. Known as the “Halong on land,” this stretch of water offered a tranquil escape as we were rowed through caves with rocks just inches above our heads. The experience was both thrilling and calming, a perfect blend of nature’s wonders.
Our final stop was a visit to a temple, a place steeped in history and culture. It was a fitting end to a day filled with diverse experiences, from the physical challenge of the hike to the cultural insights gained at the temple. As we made our way back to Hanoi, I reflected on the day’s adventures, grateful for the opportunity to explore a part of Vietnam that felt both familiar and new.
This Ninh Binh Adventure was a day well spent, a reminder of why I left the corporate world behind to embrace the freedom of travel. For those seeking a mix of adventure, culture, and natural beauty, Ninh Binh offers an experience that is both enriching and unforgettable.
