Day 1: Muscat-Nizwa-Misfat Al Abreyeen-Jabal Shams (Grand Canyon)
Nizwa Souk - The journey begins in the morning as the group departs from Muscat heading towards Nizwa, the former capital of Oman. Upon arrival in Nizwa, the first stop is the Nizwa Market (Souq), where a diverse array of vendors display their goods along the streets. Visitors can explore stalls offering vegetables, pottery, jewelry, handicrafts, Omani sweets (Halwa), dates, spices, and souvenirs, all within the charming old market halls. The Friday cattle market is particularly fascinating, as locals from nearby villages gather to sell goats, cattle, sheep, and chickens in a lively, open marketplace.
Nizwa Fort Oman - Adjacent to the Souq is the Nizwa Fortress, now a museum that provides breathtaking views of the ancient town and surrounding mountains. Guests can wander through the impressive fortress, exploring its numerous rooms, passages, and towers. The fort stands as an architectural testament to the economic and military prowess of the early Yaruba dynasty from the mid-17th century. It was a formidable military stronghold, designed to withstand even the most powerful attacks of its time, with traps strategically placed along corridors to deter intruders.
Misfat al Abreyeen - From Nizwa, the tour continues to the village of Misfat Al Abreyeen. This charming village is situated on a steep slope at the base of Jebel Shams, a few kilometers from Al Hamra Town. It features old homes and narrow streets, along with a Falaj system that irrigates numerous orchards, date palms, and vegetable gardens. Visitors are encouraged to spend time strolling through the village.
Jabal Shams - The journey then ascends to Jebel Shams Mountain (Grand Canyon), standing at 3009 meters high. This mountain is one of Oman’s most thrilling, offering an exhilarating off-road experience and breathtaking views. At the canyon view, which is 2000 meters high, visitors can pause to enjoy the scenery and take photos before proceeding to the resort for an overnight stay.
Jabal Shams-Balcony Walk W6-Jabreen Castle-Muscat
W6 - Balcony Walk Hike - The morning begins with a trek along the W6 path, a hike that takes approximately 4 hours. The edge of the canyon provides spectacular views of the numerous wadis and stunning valleys below.
Jabreen Castle - After descending the mountain, the next destination is Jabreen Castle. Originally designed as a presidential palace in 1670 by the Balarab bin Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya’arubi Dynasty, the castle underwent extensive renovations in 1984. Inside, visitors can find various furniture and traditional utensils that offer a glimpse into the lifestyle of the period. The building is adorned with intricate wood carvings, ceiling paintings, and stucco work. Following the castle visit, the group returns to Muscat.
