- Nauticus - Situated on Norfolk’s waterfront along the Elizabeth River, Nauticus is much more than just a maritime museum. It serves as an engaging naval, science, and ocean discovery center where both adults and children can actively explore ships, marine life, naval technology, and maritime history. Visitors can navigate through interactive galleries that illustrate how ships operate, the impact of oceans on global trade, and Norfolk’s significance as a major naval hub.
A favorite among families is the marine science section, where both children and adults have the opportunity to interact directly with marine life.
Visitors often enjoy:
- Touching horseshoe crabs,
- Observing local Chesapeake marine life, and
- Learning about ecosystems that support both wildlife and naval activities.
There is a large-screen theater showcasing maritime films and educational presentations, allowing visitors to relax while still experiencing captivating naval footage, ocean exploration films, and educational content.
- Battleship Wisconsin at Nauticus - Touring the Battleship Wisconsin offers an unforgettable experience aboard one of America’s most formidable naval warships. Standing next to Nauticus, this enormous battleship invites visitors to walk beneath its towering 16-inch guns, explore preserved crew quarters, and stand on decks where sailors served during World War II, Korea, and the Gulf War. The highlight is the thrilling Command & Control Tour, which takes guests into restricted operational areas where radar tracking, tactical decisions, and battle coordination once took place. Visitors can step inside authentic command rooms, view original consoles, and learn about how Wisconsin launched Tomahawk missiles during Desert Storm. From the bridge, expansive harbor views enhance the experience, allowing visitors to truly appreciate the scale, power, and history of one of the last great battleships ever constructed. VIP tours are available on weekends but tend to sell out quickly.

Embark on a private journey from Williamsburg to Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin, enriched by an outstanding guide whose personal connections bring Norfolk’s naval history to life. Bambi Walters, who grew up in the Norfolk area and worked as an engineer for the Naval Sea Support Center supporting the Atlantic Fleet, provides guests with unique insights into naval operations, ship systems, and the Chesapeake Bay’s living ecology. Her perspective combines military knowledge with local history and coastal science. The Wisconsin guided Command and Control tour takes you through the “nerve center” of the Battleship Wisconsin, often led by a retired Navy veteran. Following the Command and Control tour, Bambi will guide you through several additional decks, explaining shipboard life and the power behind one of America’s greatest battleships. Additional time may be spent engaging in “hands-on” activities in the Interactive Science Center, exploring themed exhibits, and watching HD films. Maximum of 7 people.
