The day I will never forget 🙌 - If you’re visiting Nosy Komba, do yourself a favor and book the full-day jungle trek with the Black Lemur Sanctuary. It ended up being one of the most memorable experiences of my entire trip to Madagascar.
From the moment we started the hike, it felt like stepping into another world. The forest is incredibly lush, full of towering trees, wild plants, and the constant soundtrack of birds and insects. Our guide was fantastic—super knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the wildlife and conservation work happening on the island. He pointed out things we would have completely missed on our own, from tiny chameleons hiding in the leaves to different species of lemurs moving through the canopy.
Of course, the highlight was seeing the black lemurs up close. Watching them leap effortlessly between branches and interact with each other in their natural habitat was amazing. They seemed curious about us too, occasionally stopping to observe us before continuing on their way. It felt like a genuine wildlife experience rather than something staged for tourists.
The trek itself was a good adventure—expect some steep sections and plenty of humidity, but nothing too extreme if you have a basic level of fitness. The views from higher points on the island were absolutely worth the effort, with beautiful glimpses of the surrounding ocean and neighboring islands.
What really stood out to me was how much the sanctuary cares about protecting the lemurs and supporting the local community. You can tell the guides take pride in what they’re doing, and it makes the whole experience feel meaningful, not just like a tour.
If you enjoy nature, wildlife, and a bit of adventure, this trek is a must-do. Just remember to bring good shoes, water, and your camera—you’ll definitely want it.
I would recommended!

A fantastic and authentic jungle experience! - An amazing jungle trek on Nosy Komba. The tour operator was great about contacting us the night before and in the morning until we met up with our local guides. Our guides, Raymonde and Ahmed were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
We took a boat from Nosy Be to Nosy Komba. The Island was incredibly lush with flora and fauna. If you’ve ever been to Kauai, Hawaii, it’s similar.
We saw lemurs, chameleons, snakes, vanilla, cocoa, coffee, bananas, peppers, and huge jackfruit.
Our favorite was meeting friendly lemurs near the peak. We also saw local jungle homes and the families who live there. We did not get to taste any fruit like other reviews mentioned.
Also keep in mind, the terrain is steep and can be very slippery after rain, so this trek is best for prepared and fit travelers.

An adventure in the jungle. - We are thrilled after a full day hike in the jungle to the top of Nosy Komba in Madagascar.
My husband and I got picked up at the hotel Ravintsara in Nosy Be at 0830 am by the guide Berto. We drove the 25 min to Helle Ville where the boat waited for us at the harbor. We first stopped at an ATM to get some cash. The boat trip took approximately 30 min on calm see. We got our life jackets and enjoyed the ride. When ashore we started the hike at 1020 am. The other specialist guide Ahmed, explained about all the fruit and all the animals we saw. I have never seen fresh black pepper and vanilla on the trees before! We saw a lot of fruit and animals.
The hike to the top took approximately 3 h and 10 min with two longer and several short breaks. I had 3 liters of water to carry and we got lots of fresh fruit from a farmer lady at the first long pause. Fresh mango, pineapple, lychees and bananas from the trees! Yum.
On the top we got freshly squeezed juice from the lady who lived there and we rested for 30 m before heading down. The trip down took 1 h and 45 min. We saw and fed some wild lemurs on the way. That was fun.
Then we had lunch (dinner) at 04- 0430 pm in a local restaurant. The sebu meat could have been more tender for my taste, but we were so hungry that we ate a lot! After that we saw and could hold the lemurs in the sanctuary and see the turtles and my husband held a boa snake. That was amazing. The lemurs were so funny to feed and hold. After that we stopped to buy some fresh dried vanilla from the local market and then headed for the boat trip back.
This is an expensive trip but well worth the money we think. The saftety was of high priority. That is important.
We think the guides could have provided some more snacks or nuts / fruit on the way up to the top. I had brought some dried figs from home that gave me more energy when I needed that on the top.
We are 56/57 years old and enjoyed the hike. It’s was not too hard but not easy pisy at all! We were really exhausted while waiting for the dinner.
We are used to hiking for many hours back home in the nature in Norway, so we knew we could master 5/6 hours of hiking. But never underestimate the heat!
We used our regular jogging shoes and my Sketchers were ok but too soft. So I should have had more solid jogging / hiking shoes should I have done the hike again.
It was a bit slippery some places and the guides held our hands and supported us when needed!
We came back to the port in Helle Ville at 0615 pm. Just in time before the dark. Thank you for an adventerous day. We can really recommend this hike!

Around successful excursion - The trip was around successful. The whole thing started with the pickup of hotel. The advantage of our guide Soazaka was that she spoke good German. So we were able to ask many questions about the fruits and bute flora and fauna. Soazaka Has gone to great lengths to make the quite exhausting ascent informative. We would book the trip again anytime. The highlight in the end was the park with the whole animals :)

A wonderful experience - A wonderful day! After paddling for about twenty minutes, we reached a locobe, a pristine forest, where, among trees and unique animals such as boas, iguanas, lemurs and much more, we lived a unique experience.

Amazing how they care about customers! - We booked the trip in advance and the night before our trip my daughter got stomach problems. I wrote to Maxim ( the boss) at 2 am that we need to cancel the trip. To my amazement we could postpone the trip (even though it was too late to cancel it on TripAdvisor) . On the trip the amazing guides ( Gaia and Ahmed ) took good care of us and adjusted the trip to our kid’s condition. We got a little jungle trip ( just 1 hour) but it was enough to get insight in the jungle life and plants. Then we went snorkeling on a small island. We also got beer and snacks. Then we had lunch in a village and visited a lemur sanctuary! It was perfectly adjusted to our needs. The guides were friendly and gave us a lot of information about local life, plants and animals. The trips offered had always the same program but if you would like the trip which will be personally adjusted to your needs and your condition, if you need to feel safe that if something unpredictable happens you can postpone and adjust the trip, then Fossa Travel is the right choice!

Explore the lives of locals and wildlife - Beautiful visits to villages surrounded by nature, which allows to explore the way of life of the inhabitants, but also wildlife. Be careful not to underestimate the climbing portion of the mountain. In the 3 groups doing the ascent at the same time as us, 2 turned back halfway. Our super guides Raymonde and Amed, were very attentive especially during the ascent of the mountain and the U-turn. Despite our U-turn, Raymonde and Amed were able to adapt the activity so that it was complete despite the U-turn.

Immersive Nosy Komba Trek - Our full day jungle trek to the summit of Komba Island was a wonderful experience, better than expected. Our English speaking guide, Elio, made the trek super interesting by explaining about the interesting flora and by describing the day to day life of the hamlets we walked through. Our special immersive experience included tasting cacao beans and sugar apples as we passed local families going about their daily routines. The views are beautiful and quite spectacular from the Nosy Komba summit where we enjoyed a freshly made fruit drink.
Walking through the Lemur Sanctuary was the icing on the cake. At one point I was festooned with 3 lemurs.
Our dinner in the village tasted extra good after our long rewarding day. Then a sunset boat trip back to Hell-ville Port.
Thank you Elio for introducing us to your beautiful country!
Suggestions to tour operator:
Given the cost of the trip it would have been nice if the drink at the summit were included.
When landing in Anjiabe at low tide & walking across the sand, a bucket of salt water to rinse sand off your feet prior to putting on socks and shoes would be appreciated.

Excursions to Nosy Be with Cosimo - It is the second time, after five years, we have returned to Nosy Be, we have always relied on Cosimo Cael whatsapp +261326834419 for excursions. He is a guy who speaks Italian very well, attentive, precise and scrupulous, he offers an excursion package at very competitive prices compared to those offered in resorts. I would like to recommend him because in addition to being very professional he is also very friendly and, for excursions that include lunch, he provides excellent food, drinks and very fresh fish, alternatively you can inform him of different needs in advance, I had no problems with my son to make me some chicken he is always ready to help you.
