- Eglise Saint - Pierre De Royan - This is the Church of Our Lady of Royan, a masterpiece of 20th-century modern architecture. It represents the city’s rebirth following the bombings on January 5, 1945, which destroyed the old neo-Gothic shrine from 1874.
- 17 Rue Alsace Lorraine - You are standing in front of the Protestant Centre of Royan, a modest yet significant structure. Constructed between 1953 and 1957, it signifies the city’s reconstruction after the 1945 bombings and reflects a much older religious heritage.
- Place Charles de Gaulle - Place Charles de Gaulle embodies the city’s tragic and renaissance history. It was once the site of the first Church of Our Lady of Royan, a Gothic structure from the 12th century.
- Boulevard de la République - This boulevard perfectly captures the revolutionary urban vision of reconstruction: creating a city with dual aspects. While the seafront represents the “seaside” for tourists and leisure, this boulevard forms the “city side,” the vibrant heart of daily life in Royan.
- Marche Central de Royan - You are on Boulevard Aristide Briand, one of the city’s main roads, designed during the initial phase of post-war reconstruction.
- Gironde estuary - In Royan, you are facing the largest estuary in Western Europe: the Gironde estuary. This vast expanse stretches over 75 kilometers, formed by the confluence of the Garonne and the Dordogne at the beak of Ambès.
- Place du Maréchal Foch - You are in Place Foch, one of Royan’s most poignant locations, as it is a rare witness to history before the destruction. This square holds a secret in its name: it was once called Place des Acacias before being renamed in honor of Marshal Foch after the Great War.
- Royan - The boulevard to your left is Boulevard Frédéric-Garnier, one of the most beautiful promenades in Royan. It runs along Grande Conche beach and through the Parc district, an area miraculously spared by the 1945 bombings.
- 6 All. des Rochers - You are in a city that has transformed French relations with the ocean. The history of thalassotherapy in Royan began long before the term was coined in 1865 by Dr. Joseph La Bonnardière, who combined the Greek words thalassa, meaning sea, and therapeia, meaning treatment.
- Place de l’Auditorium - You are in the auditorium square, one of the most iconic areas of the Royan seafront. On your left, the distinctive curved shape, reminiscent of a giant shell, is Marcel Canellas’ auditorium, completed in 1961.
- 1 Bd de la Grandière - Opposite the auditorium are the Botton galleries, one of the most original achievements of the Royan reconstruction. The first Botton galleries, built in 1926 in an Art Nouveau style, were located in Botton Square, north of the waterfront.
- Royan - Kerveno’s Esplanade Felix Marie, on your left, honors a hero of the Second World War who fell here just days before Royan’s liberation.
- Jardins de la Mer - You are on a site rich in history. Where you now admire these flower gardens once stood the Royan casino of the 1960s, one of the boldest works by architect Claude Ferret.
- Port de Royan - You will pass by one of the most iconic ports on the French Atlantic coast. The history of this place dates back to the Middle Ages when the first sailors discovered this protected natural haven, ideally situated on the right bank of the Gironde estuary.
- Plage De Foncillon - You are on Foncillon beach. It was the first in Royan to welcome bathers: as early as 1819, Mayor Labarthe reserved access exclusively for women, while men went to the Grande Conche.
- Palais des congrès de Royan - You are in front of the Palais des Congrès in Royan, a gem of French modernist architecture. Inaugurated in 1957, this building was one of the first congress palaces built in France.
