Although sightings are not guaranteed, as these are wild animals with their own schedules, the hide provides the best and most respectful opportunity to potentially see these unique penguins in their natural habitat. Binoculars are highly recommended for a closer view if they appear.

Situated in cliffs at the northern end of the pristine Waipati Beach, they have gained international attention for their length - the two sea-formed passages together measure approximately 200 meters - and their impressive height, reaching up to 30 meters.
