Fascinating tour - Getting a sense of life in this city 2000 years ago was fascinating. Excellent guide. It’s about 2000 feet higher than Oaxaca city and I had a bit of trouble with that. But I’m still very glad I did it. (I do have very mild emphysema, btw)

10/10 Experience - Our guide was extremely personable, knowledgeable, and charismatic. We saw much more of the ruins than other visitors we spoke too on different tours. And we were back in time for lunch despite it not feeling rushed! I’d recommend it to any friend visiting. 10/10

Great guide to Monte Alban - Minivan left right on time. It was a twelve seater and very comfortable. Balam, our guide was very attentive and full of knowledge. The site was amazing to see, especially with Balam's detailed explanations. There was no question he couldn't answer!

Pefect 1/2 Day Tour - 5 Stars. Our driver and guide were fantastic, 8 people in our am "1/2 day tour". Arrived to Monte Alban by about 8:30am. Our guide was friendly and funny, patient and accommodating. We breezed through admissions and got straight to the tour. First 90 minutes with our guide explaining the history and the site. Released us to explore and take photos by about 9:50 am with instructions to report back to bus area at 11:45. The 90-minutes of exploration was just about right in the morning sun - no crowds and still cool enough to hike. A full day - or a 2pm tour would have likely been crowded and hot. Some will want more time at the site which is understandable, however for us it was the perfect amount of time to circle the full site leisurely (I took over 300 photos), arriving back to Oaxaca at 12:15 with the rest of the day to relax and visit bars/restaurants. This makes for a very lovely - and not exhausting - day. The site is much larger than I anticipated and very open - for me at least I enjoy being at ancient sites before crowds arrive. The site is moderately strenuous with some giant stairs (and few handrails). Very uneven ground - watch your step and learn how to traverse stairs sideways using the higher stairs as your support. Wear comfortable sturdy shoes. If a walking stick would help you I'd recommend it. Note: the posted park fee of $100 pesos has increased to $210 pesos per person and you will need cash, not credit card, so plan ahead.

Morning in Monte Alban - Oscar, our guide, and Gabriel, our driver, both did a great job. Pickup and drop off was smooth. Oscar was able to answer all our questions with great patience and knowledge. His respect for the people who designed, built, and lived in Monte Albán really impressed us. I have a hard time climbing, and he was very kind about allowing me rest breaks. We enjoyed our trip and learned a great deal!

Awesome tour, highly recommend in English or Spanish - Wonderful experience at Monte Albán. Our guide Balam was very knowledgeable and very smoothly combined English and Spanish for a mixed language tour. He was also incredibly knowledgeable about not only Monte Alban but also surrounding civilizations and history (Maya, Aztec) and how the Zapotecas fit into the larger history of the region. 10/10!

A mixed experience - We had a mixed experience. First we did the three-hour walking tour of Oaxaca with Balam. He was a very good guide and the tour was interesting and informative, although we would recommend that he also introduce people to the fascinating neighborhood of Jalatlaco. Balam then handed us off to his elderly father, Juan, for the half-day trip to Monte Alban and the full-day trip to Tlacolula, Hierve de Agua and Mitla. At Monte Alban, Juan explained to us in broken English that the signage and other tour guides (and Wikipedia and every other source we have seen) were all mistaken in describing the carvings as war captives being tortured. Instead, Juan told us, Monte Alban was a giant university built by the wise and peaceful Zapotecs, and the carvings were actually medical texts to help Zapotec medical students with difficult childbirths. Our trip to Mitla was less confusing, although we weren't sure what we should believe of Juan's explanations, and we enjoyed Hierve de Agua and the Tlacolula market.
