The Central Mosque has established a council to offer financial and other services to the local Muslim community. Although the request to build the center was made in 1966, approval was not granted until 1978, following the 1973 oil crisis, which elevated the economic and political influence of Arab oil-producing nations. The mosque was officially opened in 1985.
• Torre de Belem - The Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) was constructed between 1514 and 1520 in the Manuelino style by Portuguese architect and sculptor Francisco de Arruda. It was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983. Built on the northern bank of the Tagus River, this tower initially served to protect the city. Later, it was converted into a lighthouse and customs house. It is located near the Jerónimos Monastery.
