- Saint Sophia - The Church of St. Sophia, renowned for its medieval architecture and frescoes, stands as one of Macedonia’s most significant monuments. Originally constructed in the 9th century, the current structure is a reconstruction from the 11th century, with the courtyard added in the 14th century. During the latter half of the 15th century, under Ottoman rule, the church was converted into a mosque, with frescoes covered in lime, the dome flattened, and minarets erected over the northwestern domes. It was left abandoned in the early 20th century, but post-World War II restorations uncovered the frescoes once more.
- St. Jovan Kaneo - Saint John the Theologian, or simply Saint John at Kaneo, is a Macedonian Orthodox church perched on a cliff above Kaneo Beach, overlooking Lake Ohrid in Ohrid, North Macedonia. Dedicated to John of Patmos, the author of Revelation, who some believe to be the same as John the Apostle, the church’s construction date is unknown. However, documents about the church’s property suggest it was built before 1447. Archaeologists estimate its construction likely occurred in the 13th century, prior to the rise of the Ottoman Empire. Restoration in 1964 revealed frescoes in its dome.
- Plaoshnik - Plaošnik is an archaeological site and sacred location in Ohrid, North Macedonia, situated 250 meters below Samuil’s Fortress. The site is undergoing restoration to return it to its original state. The Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon was erected by St. Clement in 893 on the foundation of an earlier Christian basilica and dedicated to St. Panteleimon. Following the Ottoman Empire’s rise, St. Clement’s church was converted into a mosque, known as the Imaret Mosque, of which only a small enclosure remains. The Imaret Mosque was demolished in 2000, as it was built over the remains of a church in the Plaošnik area. On October 10, 2007, archaeologists discovered a deposit of approximately 2,383 Venetian coins while excavating the monastery. Pasko Kuzman, a prominent archaeologist from the Republic of Macedonia, noted the coins’ significance, indicating commercial links between Ohrid and Venice.
- Tsar Samuel’s Fortress - Ohrid Fortress, a symbol of the city, is an essential part of its urban landscape and history, representing one of the largest medieval fortifications in Macedonia. The earliest historical records of the city Lychnidos (the ancient name of Ohrid) and the fortress date back to the historian Livy in 209 BC, who mentioned its construction and role in the city’s pivotal historical moments. Chronicler Malchus (Malala) recorded in 478 that the fortified city had strong defensive capabilities, which prevented the Ostrogoth king Theodoric the Amalian from conquering Lychnidos during his military campaign toward New Epirus, as the city was situated on a fortified stronghold with abundant springs within its walls.
- Lake Ohrid - Lake Ohrid, located on the border between southwestern North Macedonia and eastern Albania, is one of Europe’s deepest and oldest lakes. It boasts a unique ecosystem of global significance, with over 200 endemic species. It is the second-largest lake in the Balkans. Most of the lake lies within North Macedonia, with the remainder in Albania. The largest cities on its shores are Ohrid and Struga in North Macedonia, and Pogradec in Albania. Approximately 200,000 people reside in the area surrounding the lake.

Private boat tour with friends - We went on a boat trip with 6 friends and had an amazing day with Nikola. He is knowledgeable about the area, funny and relaxed. We officially booked a 6,5 hour private boat tour but we at least sped 8,5 hours on the water. There was no rush with Nikola and we had a great day.

Amazing Family Tour with the Best Guide - We had an absolutely amazing experience with Nikola at Lake Ohrid! I went with my whole family, and from start to finish, everything was seamless. Nikola was a fantastic communicator — he picked us up very close to our hotel, which made things incredibly easy and stress-free.
He’s a truly exceptional tour guide: knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the area. Every stop along the way came to life through his explanations and stories. We learned so much about the history and beauty of Lake Ohrid while still feeling relaxed and entertained.
Nikola went above and beyond to make sure we had a memorable day, and he succeeded — it was one of the highlights of our trip. I would highly recommend him to anyone visiting the area. You won’t find a better guide!

Highly recommended boat tour company - We booked an all day boat your of Ohrid. I was impressed that I was immediately messaged by Nikola to thank me for my booking and offering any help he could be. We were really looking forward to spending the day on the lake but the wind became too strong with weather warnings. I was contacted by Nikola before I awoke to keep me updated and, when it became obvious the weather was not going to improve, he actioned my cancellation and refund immediately. We were leaving the following afternoon so I asked if he could squeeze us in for a short (2 hour) private tour, which he sorted for me straight away. We had a lovely 2 hours with our captain, Nesh, who made us so relaxed and unhurried when we stopped to swim.

Disappointing - My wife and I booked the eastern shore trip to St. Naum Monastery which includes stops @ the Bay of Bones Museum and the Church of Mother Mary at Zaum. I booked it for €75 euro each which is high. I had read that you can walk up to boats at the pier and get the trip for €25 each. I chose to pay the premium because of B & F’s great reviews on TA, Nikola supposedly speaks great English and their boats looked very nice. I was also worried that there might not be many boats operating in mid-October.
There was a miscommunication about the trip as Nikola thought I was interested in a private trip as opposed to a shared trip. (Seems like a website problem as I definitely submitted a request for the shared option.) On the morning of the trip he re-booked me with another boat. It was pretty bad - loud heavy metal music and a group of pensioners passing around a liter of cheap beer. It turned out that they put us on the wrong boat because it was an express to the monastery. They dropped us off at the Bay of Bones and another boat picked us up from there. Boat number 2 was fine and the captain was very good.
Nikola dropped the price to €25 each which was sporting of him, but it’s also the going rate for the trip from what I could determine.
I rated them a 3 because we ended up getting the trip we booked at a reasonable rate despite all the confusion. I do not recommend booking with them, though, as they charge premium prices and you could be traveling with anybody.
